This depends on whether solder hackery for the pickup shield wires was done. Unfortunekty the switch isn’t one wire per screw connector and they suggest soldering to a common wire.

That's where I tried one. They have a huge stock of Dingwalls in the store, nice amps to test them out, too.
The Super P did nothing for me, tone-wise. It played great though. Same with the Lee Sklar, a purple one. It felt perfect, it played ungodly good, but the tone was quite generic. Then I tried an NG-2, and was completely blown away.

I went to that store on that day to buy a Höfner Bass, and ended up with a Dingwall...

I'm thinking about moving on my ABZ, not entirely sure I'd be making the right decision but it's not getting played very much. For passive sounds I currently prefer the Super J over the ABZ so I'm kinda swaying back and forth on replacing it with a custom Super P.
Anyone want to talk me out of parting with the ABZ, it has a little sentimental value being the first major purchase after emigrating to Canada but as I said it's seeing a lot of closet time.

Put the J away for 2 weeks.... Play the ABZ and then go back to the J. That might offer up more perspective.... Im going through a similar thing with my J. I think if asked the question, " can you live without it?" try living without either or and see where it goes from there.... I cannot go without my Z3 6 at this point in life.

If money is no object, hang on to it for real. Many times I come back to a bass I haven't played in months and it's suddenly "new bass day" again!

To play devil's advocate, you mentioned a custom Super P is on your mind, and your preference is your Super J, so it sounds like the Dingwall "short scale" is more in your wheelhouse.

Well the Super PJ needs a new nut, I have TI flats on it right now and the A slot is a bit too wide so I get some awful buzz if play it hard, my very short term solution is the absolute worst (see embarrassing picture). That means I'm not really playing until I find a trustworthy local luthier who can replace the nut, I'm not having much luck on that front so it'll be a few weeks before that's fixed properly at least. We'll see how it goes with the ABZ for a few weeks.

As an aside if anyone has a recommendation for someone within an hour or two of Ottawa who could replace a nut then please let me know.

This is something I'm thinking about, I'm certainly leaning more toward the 32-35 scale at the moment but I also prefer the tighter spacing on the long scales.
I do have P-tones in both the long scale basses (Combustion and ABZ) so maybe I should just get a plain passive P and be done with it. If they made a 32-35 with 7.5-18mm spacing I'd probably be on the phone ordering it right now haha.

Money is sadly an object, with the wait time on a new build I could hold onto both. But my frugal brain says 'hey you've got $3000 sitting in the closet you could have used to pay for this new bass'.

I know it’s not in Ottawa but I’ve heard Michael does great work and it’s not tooooooo far maybe.... maybe not.
