Wow, I didn't even realize that was my SPJ5 when I liked your post. Like you, I started with an SP5 and was actually talking to Mo about adding a J PUP when the original owner asked to buy it back, so it went back to him and I bought the candy green SPJ5. I personally didn't care for the unbalanced tone of the standard P PUP (IMO) which I rectified (again IMO) by getting a reverse tort pickguard from Dingwall. In an attempt to try and make the solo bridge PUP tone useful, I swapped it out for an alnico Dingwall PUP. It did have more girth, but it is still not useful for me. Still, you can get 3 separate, and useful tones from the SPJ5, and maybe for some, 4.

Ultimately, I really do prefer my SJ5XXX, and would eventually like to replace the SPJ5 with an SJ5. In a perfect world, it would be another SJ5XXX, but my gigging band is on hold due to severe health issues with the lead singer, so the extra expense probably doesn't make sense if this becomes just a hobby, especially considering my age. My biggest issue is selling the SPJ5 without having an SJ5 lined up, and finding one with a wenge neck/board. Oh well, these aren't real world problems.

In any case, I personally prefer the increased versatility of the SPJ5 over the SP5.

I understand. To be honest, when I have these two basses with me going through the Helix, I can cop any tone I want.

A paint job can be $250
A contrast layer is $250
A wenge neck is $500
Matching blocks hmmmm $500ish?!?

Again don’t take my word for it as these prices where we’ll over a year old but the bottom line is no Dingwall paintjob cont $2500...

The price is right, could be +/- 200 $ I guess. as @Waltsdog told on my ab2 it was not just a simple painting.
A color burst will cost, as you say, around 250 $ ( not sure about two color burst price). BUT to reach this color you can't just paint natural wood, You won't have such a vivid color, and you won't have the X effect. that's the reason for all processes need those type of color to come out ( as @Waltsdog said)
I am just reporting what has been told me, I am not pretending to be an expert on this colors :)
