My apologies for the dusty, dirty bass. I can only blame the lighting.. ;-)

Your pickup looks to be the same size as mine so you'll have to email Dingwall and see if they can provide you one that will match what you have. Mine is a Super Fatty not an FD4 (note the SF - 5 on the underside) take your J pickup out and look at the label it will tell you what it is.
I know for sure that they won't have an old Super J5 pickguard so you'll have to have one custom made or get very lucky finding a used one, they are around though.

Well, it is set up for mounting another Super Fatty. I also advise starting a conversation with Jeff (tech@dingwall) about your options...

Question for my fellow Dingwallers....

I have a beautiful 2012 Super J5 with a P front pickup, which I've owned since new.

I love it, but feel like a change. I am thinking about possibly changing the neck P pickup to a standard J+J pickup config.

It has:
2 band Glockenklang preamp
Dual P Neodymium pick up in the neck
FD4 in the bridge

I think I'd need:
- new pickguard
- replacement pickup (FD4?)
- 15 minutes of steady hands and good fortune given by the benevolent soldering gods.

Can anyone advise which pickup I would need?

Also, and maybe of most importance: Am I insane? Is this GAS causing me to meddle with things I should leave alone?

I had a super JJ similar to yours and converted it to PJ. liked the JJ. LOVED the PJ! never considered going back. fwiw

I had a JJ and bought a different bass that was a PJ. Never looked back either. I typically use both in series, so I preferred the P in the neck for solo option.

I spent money to replace the Jj with the P. I think you already have the best of the best.

Pick up a Darkglass Alpha Omega Ultra.

I have also been curious to hear my SJ/P4 as a J/J, but then I would solo that P again and forget about it. I did satisfy my curiosity about what it would sound like with an AlNico V powered pickup and had Nordstrand craft a custom NP-4a for it (with Dingwall shells). I like it even more and that's saying something because the stock pickup is no slouch in any way, shape, form, or manner. There's just something about nickel rounds and AlNico that floats my tonal boat ever-so nicely.

Same here. I bought my SJ5 before they had developed a 5-string split P pickup and changed as soon as they came out. I never went back.

That looks like a regular old SR5 not a special. I’ll never understand L&Ms used pricing, it’s madness.

Don’t forget that is CAD. So it would be about $1822 USD at the current exchange rate. Maybe that’s still high, I don’t know animals.

Oh I’m in Canada, it’s quite high compared to what they go for in Kijiji (craigslist essentially) up here.

I’m a big fan of Stingrays but my Dingwalls get me close enough to that sound with a much lower weight and much wonkier frets

For me - the amethyst Combustion was tempting. If that was orange I might have caved. But I'm saving my pennies for fancy looking Canadian models.

A quick glance and thought the bridge was the reduced sized one, but you're right, it's just a regular "old" one. It kind-of makes me kick myself for not picking up a mint used one at L&M for $1000 a few years back. Then again, I am almost exclusively playing my SJ5 now, so I don't know that it would have been money well spent!
