Dingwall Owners Club

Lol. I’ve had my SJ4’s for several years now.
Besides serving as backups in case of trouble, I like to string one with flats and one with RW’s.
So I have two SP4’s and two 5’s at this point.
I’m indulging myself I know :)

Gotcha. Family photos?
It’s inevitably that we all have done so here I think. This room is kinda like Dingwalls anonymous except there’s more encouragement here then help to overcome the addiction

Lol!
When my “new to me” second SJ5 arrives (hopefully this week, Tom?) i’ll Take a group shot of my J’s.
I’m waiting in this one to arrive:

Looking forward to that. It’s always great to see new Dingwall s!

Well, I only purchased one of my SJ4’s new.
All the rest are “rescues”.
This is my other SJ5, which I purchased from a very fine forum member. You may recognize it!

Maybe not new to you but new to us! :).

Oh yes, that bass and the member that sold it to you are both very familiar around these parts. That one inparticular is gonna have a very different sound from the rest of your horde is my guess.

Yes indeed she does, but really all of them have somewhat different voices.
Besides the obvious differences have them strung with flats or RW, the pickups and electronics are different. One SP4 is a passive only bass, the other is active or passive with the Glock preamp, so these are very different sounding.
My SJ5’s are also quite different, but they all have similar feels under the hands.
Just different flavors of funk machine :)

2 completely different flavours but same amazing playability.

I’ve liked them. They’re more aggressive than what was on it when I bought it and more aggressive than what I’m used to.
I went thorough an old set of GHS Pressure Wounds, D’Addario black tape wounds, and TI flats early on after I got the bass and threw the NYXL’s on just to try a new set of rounds, as I had a new set without a home. They’ve stayed on this long so that means they’re ok. I typically run the tone control around 1/3 - 1/2 way up with these strings due to my leaning away from overly trebley tones but that’s just the way I roll.
They seem well balanced and there’s tons of dynamic overtones and harmonically rich noises coming from the bass but that may just be the nature of the bass.
I’d like to try a new set of Pressure Wounds and some Pure Blues on this bass but haven’t got ‘round to it yet.
I wouldn’t hesitate to try the NYXL’s again on a different bass just to see how much of what I’m hearing is down to the strings or the bass.
Nice! I really like the Dunlop Nickel Superbright on my Lakland P, but they don't work as good on the SJ due to the multi scale i think. On the SJ I've been using Dunlop Marcus Miller Superbright, which have a very nice tension and tone, but they feel VERY rough.

Just to test some things out I put an old set of Dingwall Steels on the bass & and old set of DR Hi Beams i had laying around.
I'm really liking the feel/response of the Hi beams, but I more of a nickel guy, so I might also give Pure Blues a try

One important factor to keep in mind is that monoscale string sets were probably designed to have even tension across the instrument on a monoscale instrument, and multiscale strings were designed to have even tension across the instrument on multiscale instruments.

I've been using the Pure Blues on my SP4 and SJ/P4 for months. I think you will like them.
