I'm thinking about returning to realm of live music, but I have not owned an amp for almost a decade, so I am very behind the times on that front. I'm leaning towards a generic power amp+ a cheap or used bass cabinet, since I already have a SansAmp pre that I'm able to live with for the time being.

I used to rock Markbass cabs. They are great if you like a low-mid bump with your tone, perfect for the Jaco burp. I had an Epifani 3x10 that I absolutely loved but it had a scooped tone - literally everything through it sounded good. I have been using a fEARful 1212/6 for the last few years and it remains as my only cab. I have the True 3-way cross over, the first 1212/6 to get one. I like that it is flat and can be dialed in how I want, no preset tone. I like this for on stage monitoring, honestly. The issue with the fEARful is that if you put something crappy through it, it sounds like crap loud.

Consider this another vote for full-range, flat response bass cabs.

My Audiokinesis Thunderchild is similar to the 1*12 version of Diabolus’ fEARful. I currently pair it with G-K heads, but it sounds amazing no matter what amp I use it with.

When you’re rocking a Dingwall, there’s no reason to fear the crap in = crap out equation.

But I wouldn’t use a rack power amp as part of a stack anymore, unless I got an amazing deal on a used one.

Too many stellar, compact bass heads in the same price bracket these days.

Spending some time today giving this new to me SuperJ some TLC. It’s had a rough life. I’ve finally got all of the dirt/grime/crusty/crud off that it arrived with.:vomit:

Next up, new strings and setup & Green luminlays. There are quite a few dings. I have considered refinishing but not sure yet. Even if I did, I would probably just redo the Candy Apple Green. It's such a cool color. Will look great with the Luminlays.

Interesting that it is more susceptible to dings. I’ve become a lot more accepting of dings, they are bound to happen. It is rare that I have dinged a bass all the way down to the wood though.

Most of mine typically come from someone else. It can be difficult dodging horns on a cramped stage.

I have a couple of down to the wood dings on mine and I have no idea how they got there. They are big enough that it would seem they would have had to have a somewhat substantial hit and I figured I'd remember that. I have knocked my white (poly) SJ5 on many an occasion and it still looks new. Until I get a dent down to the wood, I wouldn't really be able to compare the finish thicknesses, but that is just the general feeling I get (that the candy apple is thinner/more fragile).

Part of it I wonder is that on the candy finishes, if you knock through it you're more likely to see it, where on wood, you'll compress it a bit. Only if you get past the stain will it jump out at you.
