Question to those who play fingerstyle on a Dingwall with 3-pickup config: How/where do you position your right hand? Most of my basses have two pickups, and I pluck the strings right between them, my thumb resting on the neck pickup. Does your right hand float and play between the neck pickup and the neck? Or do you actually pluck the stings right above the pickups? How comfortable is it?

Almost always on the middle pickup. Though I sometimes do floating thumb.

I put the thumb in the notch between the neck and middle pickup when playing on the B and E, and floating thumb for the other 3 strings (yeah I only have 5 of them, sorry ..).

It makes it easier for me to pluck the strings "diagonally", as in more parallel to the pickups than perpendicular to the strings in fact.

Usually on the neck or middle pickup and pluck right over the pickups. I tend to move my position a little depending on what sort of sound I want. Sometimes I play right up over the end of the fretboard on my ABZ.

Heard that, lol! I've capped my Dingwall buying by putting a few goals in front of myself as preconditions to ordering a legitimate custom Dingwall. Finding a lady, getting married, buying a home, and playing a gig at my favorite local venue are all on the list - and it'll be quite a while before I've crossed all that off!

Depends on what tone I'm going for. Could be a pick right over the middle when all three are on, could be finger anywhere from near the bridge to near the neck, or even over the neck. If I'm playing finger style over one of the pickups, I rest my thumb on that pickup probably about 33 - 50% of the time.

I use the floating thumb technique (since about 2007) and I haven’t had to worry about that ever since.

Nope it is “tiger eye” IIRC. It’s really a beautiful finish.

From memory I think I go thumb in that little notch between the bridge and middle pickup.

Too many useable tones available by shifting my right hand position, to settle for just one or two spots.

Also, I want to be able to vary my attack in response to how loud we are, punctuation within a phrase, overall aggression level, etc. Flipping a switch on a per-song basis, or even verse vs chorus vs bridge, doesn't do it for me any more.

I’m so glad I made that conversion. I agree, the ability to simply move your hand position around at will just opens up so many options. Also, no wear spots and muting is automatic.

Someone catch me up on something -- people were lamenting the headstock change DBird -> DRoc, but, I'm not seeing it? The headstock looks very nearly identical between the two.

ooooh the Standard, got it. I was looking at the Canadian ones and wasn't seeing a difference. This kind of makes sense and gives more differentiation between the two, but, I'm not enjoying the flat headstock on the Standard DRoc. Thank you

I'm with you. Bummer that the color swoosh on the headstock didn't stay with the standard.

@RHA III @EMoneySC2 This is true. I only came back to playing music when my wife granted me a room in our new home to use as a “man cave”. I turned it into a home theatre/ music room.

Some wives like the fact that band practice is at the house, perhaps because they attended all of their husband's gigs back when the husbands were still young, single, and somewhat less senile.

1/4 of the house (ever-so-classy 1970's split level) is dedicated to music, gaming (my sons, who can't seem to leave), and exercise. Although I must say most of the exercise equipment is tough to reach behind all that music gear....
