The thing is that I didn't fancy an 18-months wait so I bought one from bassdirect which was pretty much spec'd the way I wanted it to.
Except for these switches which were lacking unfortunately

I would have totally have gotten them otherwise, especially for what they cost.
Now I don't really feel like hacking into the body to add them

Also I must say that I was very happy and impressed with the 4-way selector and I'm afraid with the switches I would have to actuate them when switching, maybe that's unfounded though.



Sure, I understand this - however I'm not saying that any more expensive bass should sound better than a less expensive one just because it's more expensive, but when going up in a builder's range I would certainly expect it.
Like if I ever buy a Z3 I would certainly expect it to be able to do the afterburner sounds and more, but maybe I'm being too optimistic here ?

In any case I understand about MTD too, they are wonderful instruments, I was totally in love with them but they just sound so polite

Having experience across the line of longer-scale basses from Combustion to NG, AB and Z-series...They're different but different. My Z-series is more polite than the AB was. My NG felt about the same as the Combustion, but is more aggressive than either the Z or AB. Body & neck woods, slight materials differences and of course the electronics make tonal differences.

What's better or worse? None of them. I can tell you that my band is split down the middle between what they like better. Some guys much prefer the sound of the NG, while a few of 'em really like the Z. They're different and it probably depends on context.

The 'switches' are not worth losing sleep over. I prefer my coils in series (I had one bass that was hardwired in parallel, one with switches, and a few that are all wired in series). Its easy enough to get in and do the wiring yourself if you really want to and I didn't find much use in doing 'on the fly' switching in a live situation. I find that the 4-way gives more than enough tonal variation to cover lots of territory. Again, if you're building from scratch...I get it, it's not terribly expensive and it gives you an 'extra'. But not having them would never stop me from buying a Dingwall.

When I get my 3rd pickup in my combustion I'm going to wire it all series.

But have to figure out how to get MB, M, NB and all on. I don't play with just the neck.

I don't want my AB to sound the same, being a hand-made bass I don't think even two models with the same spec would sound exactly the same anyway.
But I would have thought it easier to get the same level of aggressiveness, yes.

Also I never really liked maple necks/fb, or active basses, or solid colors and glossy finishes, so no nolly for me.
Oh and I much prefer the AB body with it's one horn from top to bottom
Totally jealous of the Z bridge though, it just looks so much better.

I agree. I don’t want my Canadian makes to sound like a Chinese model either but the reality I think is the fact that the Chinese models sound and play great. The Canadians just allow a person to add there custom touch and imo They just play even better then great.

The Z bridge is awesome!!

hah. So, I mailed them last night asking some easy but specific questions. Today, the listing got taken down. I'm betting it was one of those "stores" that tries to sell items in a store in their area. They take a few photos, list on eBay for more than the store had it at, then pocket the profit if it sells on eBay...

So I finally slapped new Dingwall Nickels on my NG3. Damn those sound nice....

The tension is great but I think a bit more loose than the tension of the orginal strings which where on it from the factory.
I thought the NGs come with Nickels?
Or do they come with Steels?
Anyway great strings for shure! Probs to Sheldon and the guys!

Decided I didn't really have a need for 2 Super J5s. The Candy green one didn't really have a chance once my new one arrived, so I have decided to trade for this AB-1. Figured it would be a good opportunity to give a extended range Canadian built 4 a go. Wenge for the win!

I definitely prefer the nickels. To me, they have a lot more midrange and core to the sound, compared to the slightly scooped steels.

yep... must be the one. It’s headed to the US from Canada. Didn’t think about it being the Christmas tree bass, but I can see that with the dots.

Guy's here as I type, hopefully it's just a contactor/transformer. I could fix it myself, but I rent, plus it's in the creepy, hot attic- this time of day, it can kill you up there.

I need to practice for church, don't have any drive right now, I don't mind the heat, but I haven't felt A/C since Thursday night- Reminds me of when Irma hit a couple years ago, no power for a week and I had to work 16hr shifts for the electric company's crew.

make sure they are all in cases, and the cases are closed tight. That way when the AC comes back on, the speed of the drop in humidity won't be too rapid.
Also, if you have multiple floors, put them up on the top floor where there is less humidity.

Mold grows above 65% very quickly. So if you really are at 80%, it is pretty imperative that it gets repaired quickly.

You might want to just go to Walmart or whatever and buy a cheap small dehumidifier and put it in your smallest room and put the instruments in there with the door closed.
