Dingwall Owners Club

make sure they are all in cases, and the cases are closed tight. That way when the AC comes back on, the speed of the drop in humidity won't be too rapid.
Also, if you have multiple floors, put them up on the top floor where there is less humidity.

Mold grows above 65% very quickly. So if you really are at 80%, it is pretty imperative that it gets repaired quickly.

You might want to just go to Walmart or whatever and buy a cheap small dehumidifier and put it in your smallest room and put the instruments in there with the door closed.
This is a man who knows his stuff!!

I've been enjoying the clarity of pitch in the low end of my NG2 5banger. So much so that it took me a while to notice something: the bass sounds awfully thin without the preamp. My '97 Warwick Corvette 5 string has an enormous low end without help from the preamp. Am I just comparing apples to oranges? Is the NG2 designed this way for a specific reason?

I could imagine the NG is designed specifically for the clarity, since Nolly plays with a lot of distortion and often tuned quite low.
I had a 98 corvette 5, and it also had massive lows and low mids, but I remember struggling to get anything meaningful out of it below drop A :roflmao:
besides the darkglass pre was made specifically for the NG back in the day yeah? makes sense that they would design the bass 'round the preamp rather than the other way around, which is what warwick does (high transparancy)
apples and oranges, probably yeah

Imho, I think the thin sound is from higher tension and maple/maple neck.

A 34" is going to sound warmer and fuller, but they sound very flabby in comparison to the Dingwall's focused sound, the overtones are in the higer fq's.

That's why we have pre-amps, and eq's, you can bring out the bass, you can't fix flubber.

So I finally slapped new Dingwall Nickels on my NG3. Damn those sound nice....

The tension is great but I think a bit more loose than the tension of the orginal strings which where on it from the factory.
I thought the NGs come with Nickels?
Or do they come with Steels?
Anyway great strings for shure! Probs to Sheldon and the guys!

They do come stock with nickel strings, and the steel strings have slightly less tension.

Which setting are you talking about? The ones I’ve played and owned sound pretty close with the preamp on or off, if set flat.
So if you’re boosting the low end significantly in the preamp then that would likely be why it sounds a bit thin in passive.

This has been my experience. The Tone Capsule adds a cool "sparkle" to the sound, but when set flat the EQ isn't changing that much.

So I have decided to go with this bass, probably the first ever made by him which is pretty cool.
Now the question, should I go with emerald green black burst, or deep purple black burst?

I guess I'm not being clear. Yes, with the tone controls flat, active and passive sound identical.

I experience the same thing with my Warwick, and really all of my other active basses with a switch.

I'm comparing the tone of the Dingwall - flat - to my other basses, and noticing that there's a lack of bottom end by comparison. Since these basses are often used in metal, is the thinner tonal character something that is desirable for metal? Maybe because of the effects used? I'm just trying to learn more about the design of the instrument and why it sounds the way it does.

BTW - I have NEVER heard a low B sound this good before.....

Same here, the Dingwall pre amps I’ve had were set up just right, no difference between flat settings and the pre off. Once engaged, I could go from subtle to massive.
In my experience, this hold true for the Glockenklang (and probably the EMG too), but the Tone Capsule has a lot more inherent personality, so switching to all passive will affect the tone even with everything set flat. IMHO

All this talk of thin sound. I do not own an NG, but every other Dingwall I've played including a Combustion never sound thin to me, in fact I have to turn the bass down on my amp. Maybe you need to shelf EQ your highs, I dunno. Not sure how to help as I have never experienced that.

It's simply a comparison to my other basses. Maybe my sample size isn't big enough, or I've been enamored by basses with particularly thick bottom end. Who knows? I got the bass used; maybe it needs new batteries?.... Easy thing to try for sure.

OR maybe I need to sell my NG2 and get a Combustion. :-)

I have a combustion, love the tones I get out of it, I think what you are looking for is a neck pup. I saw on Reverb someone's got a custom NG2 to combustion pick cover, that will probably give you the tone you are looking for.
