I guess you could order a SJ with 3 pickups and swap the middle one for a P-tone, but you would need to modify the pickup selector or use a Dbird switch (which takes away the neck/bridge) setting

I think the Fender Urge is the quintessential JPJ bass.

I got the D-Bird switch too, and wanted to switch to a 3x, but I'm not sure I can live without middle soloed, and am not sure if the bridge-neck will be as warm as I can get with all 3 PUs on.

With all 3 PUs on, I'd recommend starting in active mode, dialing the lows down about 1/3 from centre, the mids almost off, and the hi down 2/3 from centre. Yes, cutting all three bands varying degrees. Very nice warm sound, but still with a lot of underlying complexity. Of course it will depend a lot on your string selection. I'm running Payson RCs. With nickels, you probably have to drop the lows even more.

I thought the Payson reduced core were nickels.

I have an LTD F-415 with the P bridge and bucker in the neck.
Gives it a really nice mid sound and smoother highs.
I think it comes down to tradition, people are used to seeing PJ not JP

Had anyone got any experience with old FD-3A pickups?
Seems like they're wired differently in older Combustions.
They are pre-wired series bridge, parallel neck. However we’ve left the output lead tabs exposed so that future series/parallel wiring combinations are possible.

Wonder what "both in series" results would sound like with them.
