My NG-2 5-string (Matte Pearl Ducati White) arrived this afternoon, and Holy $hit, this thing is an absolute beast! The hype for the low B string is no exaggeration--it's unreal. I tried playing all those passages where on the other basses, I'd always avoid playing on the B string if possible due to the timbre sounding more dull, but now using the B string on purpose with the Dingwall, and I get consistent timbre. No more having to work around the bass's limitation--now the bass works for me!

And all that was before I even flipped on the active pre-amp. With the pre-amp engaged and tweaked a bit, a nuclear explosion detonated right in my bedroom.

I thought I understood the hype, after watching all those Youtube videos and reading reviews and forum posts, but now I fully understand.

Yep, I will no longer purchase a bass with under a 36" B. It unlocks so much creative potential because the B has attack and aggression, it doesn't just go bwaaablubblubblub and play like a limp rubberband.

The best thing too is it doesn't play like it has a giraffe neck.

I am fortunate enough to have a great selection of basses, everything Fodera, vintage Fenders, FBass, MTD, Warwick's etc....and every time I play my Dingwalls after a hiatus...I think HOLY MOTHER I love these basses!! Mine are all passive and I don't regret that one bit.

I have barely touched the active on my bare bones Combustion. Quite frankly I wished they made a factory passive model.

I do miss my old 535-24 sometimes, enough that I could see myself buying one again.
It was the perfect bass sound, for the bands which give you some sonic space - which, granted, basically never happens.
Bassdirect has a nice one at the moment, but I'm bitter about the fake x-top.

But otherwise yeah, dingwall all the way.

Ok fake is too strong an expression, but if it's a 10 top it should be flawless, and this one has an obvious (and ugly) flaw between the bridge pickup and the bridge itself :

I mean it's maybe small but for that kind of price I'm anal, and I know that if I'd buy it I would totally focus on this until it would spoil me the whole instrument.
Plus I've owned a MTD which was better looking without any top at all - in fact I think on this one the back looks better than the front and without its top it would be mine already.

I'm pretty detail aware myself and I'm not seeing anything that's a deal breaker other then the fact I don't lust for that bass. maybe there's something I'm not seeing in the photos.

Aren't X tops often full of flaw and that's the charm of them?

But yes with the years more and more supposedly "10" tops have flaws and I find it regrettable.
I suppose it's becoming more difficult to find perfect tops, or that it would push the price too much.

I agree here. I think that birthmark disqualifies it as a TEN.
Having said that, I have a porous bass with beauty marks all over it and I LOVE the look of it...but they also don't claim it as a ten. I'd still love this one though

Burl has holes in it. They are usually filled. Some companies fill them differently.

So by the upper horn on this bass would be a couple of small "issues" in your books too?
I'm just trying to understand as I quite like the character these marks add to a bass and to me that makes it even more "X" but with that you have me curious.
Is there an actual description of what an X top in somewhere or do we just have different tastes?

To me these marks make a top even more unique and with that "exotic" as they are less likely to similar to another of its kind.

Something about this one I just love
it reminds me of perhaps an ancient relic
again though, I appreciate the character of the dark spots
