Dingwall Owners Club

Too bad. They're missing the whole point of stage lighting... To light up what's on stage and enhance the band's show. Not be the show. smh

I get that good lighting can be awesome and immersive but you can do it right. ;) I got tired of getting mad and got luminlay installed instead. It worked like a charm. Though I did take one of those high powered lasers to the eyes point blank one song and literally was so stunned that it took about 10 seconds to recover and find myself in the song again.

...as a side note, our singer had to forcibly kick someone who decided to reach out mid-song and screw with his pedal board. We have that on video as well.

Just one of those shows.

It was hard. People had been partying since early afternoon, the sound in the room and on stage was hostile. I was using provided backline cab, so my tone was rough.

What a let down of a show. It happens. We have to take the good and the bad and if it weren’t for the bad we would have no comparison for the good. I have gone from intensely encouraged one weekend to intensely discouraged the next, but as they say, the show must go on. And look at it this way, if that was the worst that it gets, everything else will be gravy!

In that clip it looks like you guys made the best of it

So by the upper horn on this bass would be a couple of small "issues" in your books too?
I'm just trying to understand as I quite like the character these marks add to a bass and to me that makes it even more "X" but with that you have me curious.
Is there an actual description of what an X top in somewhere or do we just have different tastes?

To me these marks make a top even more unique and with that "exotic" as they are less likely to similar to another of its kind.

Something about this one I just love
it reminds me of perhaps an ancient relic
again though, I appreciate the character of the dark spots

I think it depends on the placement. That blue Dingwall looks really nice. Wouldn't bother me on that one. The MTD and the burl Dingwall it stands out a bit more

I've learned everyone is different and is willing to accept only what they want.

I had someone return a cab because a "blemish" in the Tolex was not suitable for his studio. (It was a $400 combo and had a wrinkle in the Tolex on the back lower corner....) sigh
To be totally honest/real, I'm a non-professional player and don't have the budget for custom Canadian Dingwall. If someone offered one of those basses to me I would take them with no second thought. However if paying 5-6k for a custom bass with a fancy top I could see how some would find it annoying.

Before I found Dingwalls I was super in love with Roscoe's. He has some tops on some of his basses that are like half dark spots and that's the exact thing that makes them look so damn good.

Does anyone know how to quantify the actual frequency response changes in the different pickup configurations settings of the NX-2? Like for example, in bridge, neck, parallel, and series, which frequencies get boosted or cut and by how much? I always wanted to know if the manufacturers even know this.

I suppose I could try doing some tests, such as play the same chord in the different pickup settings and then tweak the EQ in a DAW and try to match them to each other, and then look at which frequencies I tweaked and by how much. But if this data is readily available, it'll save me a lot of time.
You should be able to do this with matching EQ. There should be many options, but I've only used the EQ from Izotope.

Basically you're playing the same stuff in a few different configurations, capturing spectral snapshots of each take and then match them (by selecting a reference take and applying quite complex EQ curve to the one that you want modified. Also don't forget to volume match them for better results).

Generally in parallel you'll have more highs. In series you may have a slight bump in mids due to lower resonant peak. FD3a in series got a cutoff frequency around ~4-5k and a little bump in hi-mids. FD3a in parallel got extended highs and a nice bump in 200Hz-500Hz region, but I honestly got no idea why it's there (I'm not a big expert on pickups or electronics).

If you ever did custom order an instrument with a Burl top, I would stress that any fill be light and even do a prebleach to get rid of any dark knots. Or, go with woods that do not typically have knots like flame or quilted maple and other harder woods.

If you did custom build a bass I suggest mentioning all the things you dont like so they are not left unknown on the work order.

So much extra labor goes in to working with buckeye and burl tops... you definitely have a right to get what you want when building a custom bass.

It's only a let down if you have high expectations. I knew going it it would probably be a bit of a 5h1tshow.

Awesome Bill

I am gonna do some checking but I might as well ask. Is rootshock on iTunes?

Yep. Itunes, Google Play, Spotify, Amazon all the usual junk. :) Also free streaming in the usual places.
