just gonna leave it here in case someone might be interested seeing what a combustion without pickguard looks like, refinished and modified by Mo's Shop (aka maurilio here on TB)

It looks so much better. Honestly, I think Dingwalls are the easiest basses to play with the best set-up. A large part of that is due to the piccolo frets, but man, the finishes and colors chosen are often so ugly (IMHO).

Also...the 1"X3" area between the neck pickup and fretboard, I'd be tempted to get a piece of the clear 3M rubber chip guard vinyl they use for vehicle bumpers to stop stone chips. It's a heavy duty clear material and will protect that area from pick marks and swirling I'd think. Just thinking out loud.

I spent something like 90 minutes with that D-Roc @ TheBassShop

It didn't follow me home. Four strings just feels pretty foreign to me, and I can't justify it. If it had been a 5 string, it most certainly would have, though. It felt amazing, is SUPER light weight, and the balance when on a strap is superb! The neck felt amazing, and there was something very appealing about the simple controls. As with my other 3x's, middle solo definitely is the stand-out setting. Pick or finger, that pickup just rips when solo'd. I hope someone picks it up soon - $1560 is the price, which, feels like a steal.

While there, I also played this briefly:

It played and felt much like the Darkglass NG3 I have. I only played it for a few minutes though, kind of put it through it's paces. I got to be the third non-Dingwall employee to play it, after a couple employees from the shop played it. Setup out of the box was pretty spot-on.

And, last but not least, I got to play an AB2 6st fretless (no photo, sorry). I wish I had taken my Pedulla to A/B the two directly. The AB2 was not for sale -- it was just there for some new strings and setup work, but the owner OK'd me taking it for a spin. Good thing it wasn't, though, otherwise it almost certainly would've followed me home. My intonation was ALL over the place, despite so much time with Dingwalls. But, I think it would honestly not take any extreme amount of woodshed time to hone it in to a respectable amount.

Anyway, that sums up my shop trip yesterday. Always a pleasure visiting Chad and Jeff at the shop, as is getting to put my paws on more Dingwalls (as well as be there when others get to try them for the firrst time!).

Just noticed something a little odd about my FD3 pickups. I noticed that in series and bridge only there is a very quiet but noticeable hum (same kind of thing you'd get from single coils), but in neck solo and both parallel, it is dead silent. Anybody have any ideas as to why? Both pickups are wired internally to series.

Picked up an NG2 5 string to go with my 4 string. Mopar Purple. Never thought of buying a purple bass before, but I like it.

And no, the 4 string is not longer than the 5 string. Shorter actually. Just an optical illusion.

You can do it but it sounds awful in parallel IMO, I speak from experience as I wired mine wrong the first time

Had a better listen to the different pickup clips and TBH I quite like the Super Fatty sound but I can't find much info on them or even they are available apart from they come on the Super series basses.

With that being said Super J&P have skinny pickups so it appears rounded Combustion ones may not be available. They are not listed on BassDirect website either.

I like the D bird peeled look better as well. That would be a great place for a pin up girl or some other sassy sticker. Or just more of that fine finish. I've never really liked the look of the Thunderbird pick guard either.

I'm still hunting a D bird standard, but that sparkly D Roc is really tempting.

With that being said Super J&P have skinny pickups so it appears rounded Combustion ones may not be available. They are not listed on BassDirect website either.

Super Fatty 2 is available in a rounded pickup. It is installed on the newest Sklars, but it is also an option on the price list for other models if desired. I believe you can buy a SF2 pickup individually, though checking with Dingwall would be more accurate.

I've got a combustion v1 that has two volume knobs and was gonna install a 4 way selector switch to make it the same as the more modern ones.....problem is looking in the electronic cavity I only see 3 wires (white,red and black)

Red hot , white and black both soldered together to ground......
Inside the pickup red and white to the coils and black looks like its to ground
with the selector work with these pickups? :S

the older more slender rounded pups are super fatties. They were slightly redesigned and put into the common larger rounded shell like FD3 and Vs. and given the new designation SF2. Super fatty 2

Ground on the bridge pup or selector switch?

Thats normal. When the coils are in series, the impedance goes way up and brings a little noise with it.

Sheldon and crew go to great lengths to satisfy and please. It's been years, but I had a blast talking bass with him over the phone a couple of times. One of God's gifts to bass players, IMO.
