Put some Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats on my ABZ 6. Overall I'm REALLY digging them. Makes the bridge pickup warm and fat (was a little thin by itself with rounds IMO). Have some La Bella White Tapes coming in the mail. Was thinking of doing a little comparison video: Rounds vs Tapes vs Flats. All would be on my ABZ 6. You Dingwallers have any interest in that sort of video? Think it could be kind of fun since string comparisons aren't too common on Dingwalls.

I just restrung my SP5 with TI flats. Gonna noodle on them for a while and see how they inspire me. They were on the bass for a few months not long after I first got it. Just gotta do a bit of a setup now that I’ve changed the strings.

Jason also helped me out with a custom set! @SLaPiNFuNK And my ABZ's FD3's are also wired internally to series.

TI flats are painfully bright for the first month or two.

Years of good times ahead. They really have a phenomenal range of response to different attacks.

Smooth, fat, round and warm or a nasty cough and sneeze when digging in. Really woody upright tones and a funky slap. My favorite strings.

So nice playing chords on the six string!

A comparison vid would be great. Never been a fan of flats but am now considering them for my eventual new Dingwall.

I was experimenting with tone shaping with Kuassa's Cerberus Bass Amp (software amp sim), and I managed to get pretty close to the tone of the original. As I predicted, lots of compression really helped with the firm attack of each note. I also backed off the Lo-Mid at 250 Hz to about 9 o'clock, and rolled off the Hi completely. Using the Noise gate with the threshold set to about 10 o'clock also helped clean up the tone a bit. My version is a bit muffled sounding because in order to roll off the finger noise, it also took away some of the air. I did order the Payson Flats today, so hopefully once I get the flatwounds on, I won't have to roll off the highs and can get some of that air back. I should be able to get about 85% to 90% close to the original by the time I record the cover.

I would love a comparison video of round, flats, and tapewounds. But how are you getting tapewounds for multi-scale? I contacted La Bella and they told me they don't have any products that would fit my NG-2.

this would be excellent. If you get the chance to try the Payson flats as well that would be a really cool option in that list

Love TI flats on my SPJ5. Pretty versatile flat IMO... and excellent for a lot of the Americana stuff I find myself playing.

Can't wait for your comparison video. I'm very curious how Dingwalls would sound with tapewound and flatwound. I find my NG-2 to be too bright and has too much finger noise, but rolling off the highs (using onboard EQ, on amp, or in software) would also kill the air. I think if the strings were less noisy, I could keep the air but not have to deal with the noise, and get the tone I want.

how high are your pick ups set? Any chance they could be lowered a bit?

IME it does change the tone. You don’t want the pick ups too high. You will lose volume as they go down but there is a sweet spot to balance volume and harmonic content.

The wall mounts are from Hang'em High Guitar Hangers . I vaguely remember buying them from the website, but it’s looking a bit crusty now.

For sure. I did the same in my fretless other than the B and love the way they feel. I would watch that video for sure.
