Maybe a question for Sheldon, but can you order the different pickups direct from Dingwall too? Or are they off the shelf parts like the preamps, and you just use the pickup shells from the installed pickups?
I assume the Darkglass preamp in the Dingwalls is the same as the Darkglass preamp you can buy from any retailer, its not extra special for Dingwall?

I believe Nordstrand has options that you can install into Dingwall shells if shells ordered separately.

Was a design coordinated between Sheldon and Doug AFAIK. Sheldon has a big part in its existence.
That said, I do believe it’s orderable straight from darkglass or dealers. Perhaps Dingwall as well.
a lot of builders have been adopting it but I do believe it’s a mostly standard preamp.
Again, that said, it may be “refined” for other builders such as Spector who is offering one up now in some euro models I think so there may be variations of it out there.
Obviously the most honest answer will come from the creators themselves.

Anyone know the background on this bass? I grabbed it in case someone else was trying to slide in, I have some good faith (plus 3 day return policy) that it is still in "new" condition.

I'm very, very close to pulling the trigger on an NG-3, found a finish I love. My one concern is the relative lack of pickup switching options. On an NG-2, you can get every permutation of pickups with the four-way switch, but on an NG-3 the stock switching options are just bridge, bridge-middle in series, bridge-neck in parallel, and neck. For all NG-3 owners, is there a relatively simple way to change up the pickup wiring to get access to some of the pickup combinations that are available on the standard Combustions, for example, a bridge-neck series mode?
If you scroll back just a bit there is a discussion about doing a 6 position switch modification.
The reality is you are still getting 4 very usable setting out of the factory switch though leaving no real disappointment. the bridge solo is probably the least desirable to most but the other 3 are all primo and very popular.
It was a beauty and played so easy. I'll miss it but hadn't been playing fretless for sometime now
It's not so much that I think the tones aren't great as such, it's that there's quite a substantial price difference. I'll look up the six position mod tho. And of course pics when she gets here. Thanks!
Not to make an assumption John but I'm guessing he meant between the NG series and AB series and he assumed with the price difference there would be more tonal options.
To the OP asking the 4 settings that are standard are well thought out and all awesome. I personally decided to do a 6 way with my incoming Z3 simply to add the middle only option and also thought while I was doing it I would get rid of the bridge only and maximize my options. Also since John Fox was awesome about paying shipping one way it only cost me shipping one more way to get it done.
So if you're thinking about it and the bass is already shipped I would see what you think of the tones stock because while Mo's work is impeccable and extremely reasonable shipping with insurance on 5k will probably cost you 300 round trip depending on how far from CA you are.
Your explanation would make sense Jay, but I only saw him discussing NG-2, NG-3, and Combustion, unless I missed one of his posts, which could have easily happened.
I agree with you that the four stock positions already offer a nice wide variety of tones. But as you are about to see in four more days, six positions is even more better.
With your new six-way plus the series/parallel switches, you will have 24 distinct tones available in passive mode, and then even way more when you turn on the preamp and use the tone controls. It'll practically feel infinite I bet!I personally think it would be awesome if Dingwall offered a 6-way switch as an option on 3x instruments.
Even if it was $100 extra, I bet most people would go for it. The switch itself is only $13 at StewMac.
