Anyone installed Nordstrand pickups on their Dingwall?

Just installed sets on both the DRoc and NG, loving both

@Blues Cat nickel strings on this demo as well, by the way.

I put Big Singles in a Combustion and Big Splits in an Afterburner. Very different from each other and both great.

I toured all last year doing exactly that for A standard tuning on a four string.

I’ve found that the BEAD strings from a five string set work really well for anything from A standard to C standard.

Personally I’d recommend either @Blues Cat’s strings, the new extended scale Dunlop Super Brights, or the Dingwall strings, probably in that order.

As @xnewyorka mentioned, if the nut has been filed properly for the thicker strings you can still use a standard gauge set for EADG tuning with no issues.

He actually has my old bass, which was the first NG3 ever before they became production basses.

I decided to try out Newtones Strings first because I was almost able to get the exact gauges I was looking for. Got myself .124, .082, .064, .048. I’ll definitely try a Dingwall 5 set after, also being in Canada it’ll make getting strings that much easier lol.

All this talking about BEAD has got me itching to try it on my D-bird. Do you have to modify just the E string slot in the nut, or do they all need to be modified?

Also, will the bass need a full setup afterwards?

Is that a thing? Ive had a V1 up to a few of the latest and id say they vary from bass to bass but the shape spec has been the same No?

All this talking about BEAD has got me itching to try it on my D-bird. Do you have to modify just the E string slot in the nut, or do they all need to be modified?

Also, will the bass need a full setup afterwards?

All nuts slots will need to be filed.

Hard to say if the bass will need a setup afterwards, but I regularly swap between standard and BEAD style tuning without needing to change anything aside from the strings.

I had mine converted. I had my favorite local guy work on it. I'm assuming he had to modify the nut. A full setup was part of what I paid for, but the bass was new to me from another climate, and changed from EADG with a change in strings.

A little more detail:

In the Big Splits set, I asked for alnico V in the neck pickups and alnico III in the bridge to emphasize the P bass character of the pickups. Not that it sounds that much like a P, but it is a split coil, so you get the idea. The bass is passive.

In the Big Singles set, I did the opposite: alnico III in neck, alnico V in bridge. I wanted to emphasize that gnarly, growly single coil J tone. The bass has stock Dingwall electronics but I run it passive.

Absolutely. They are all about huge single coil tone. They will change the sound of your bass for the better.

I was one of the 1st to put Big Singles in an ABII-5.
