I put AlniCo V pickups on two of my basses. An NP-4a on my Super P and NP-4a + Big Split on my SJ/P. I dig 'em, especially with nickel strings.

Nice! Big Splits in the NG and Big Rigs in the DRoc for me, currently.

No change in the rotary knob functionality.

That’s good to hear. I see there are two pickup cover options, did you go with the emg style or bartolini? Also one last thing, do the pickups simply drop in or was there any routing that had to be done?

With the newer style pickups they are a custom order from Nordstrand: the shells are similar to Bartolini but have rounded edges.

With the older style they use the standard EMG shells.

Either way no additional routing is required.

This is my Combustion with Big Splits, I ordered them to be installed into Dingwall covers which cost $10 extra per
pickup. Big tight sound with a pleasant harmonic overtone, a great improvement.

Anyone here have any experience with taking a 5 string set of Dingwall strings and putting them on a 4 string Combustion for lower tunings?

I toured all last year doing exactly that for A standard tuning on a four string.

I’ve found that the BEAD strings from a five string set work really well for anything from A standard to C standard.

Personally I’d recommend either @Blues Cat’s strings, the new extended scale Dunlop Super Brights, or the Dingwall strings, probably in that order.

As @xnewyorka mentioned, if the nut has been filed properly for the thicker strings you can still use a standard gauge set for EADG tuning with no issues.

He actually has my old bass, which was the first NG3 ever before they became production basses.

I was pretty underwhelmed when I tried switching my NG2 to Combustion pickup spacing with the original pickups, I switched back almost immediately, but I’ll have to give it another try now that I have the Big Splits in that bass.

Those appear to be Black Daggers V1. V2 Black Daggers are tapered and have slightly different string gauges. These should be for 37”-34”. Hold the B string up to the bass and see if the outer winding clears the nut at the 5th and 4th position. That’ll tell you what bass they are designed for.

Thanks guys, they are ok. They will need a bit of saddle tweaking when fitted.

BTW, Is their much difference, sound wise between these & the new tapered ones. e.g. If I like these will I like the V2's also?

That makes sense. I didn't think Dingwall would be happy about somebody else making a shell that says Dingwall on it. It's so easy to do that these days with 3d printing.

I checked with tech@dingwall to see that they had the correct covers first. Dingwall shipped the covers (and bolts and surgical tubing) to Nordstrand for me. Mine don't have exposed poles, so looking at them, they look like regular Dingwall pickups.

The biggest mystery is why they put guards on them at all.
