Recently scored this old Combustion and so far I'm in love with how it plays. It sounds great too but I wish it had a little more bite. I'd love to do an NG mod and while I'm more than confident, I can't bring myself to ruin the originality. This is supposedly a limited edition finish - can anyone confirm?

This series of Combustions, with the nice tops and really great burst options are truly beautiful instruments. They really do remind me of the original AB1's from the early to mid '00 period. Had this been an option when I was looking for a reasonably priced road Dingwall, I probably would have gone for one of these rather than the NG3.

Easy one my friend! You can do an NG-2 thing with it by getting a new pickguard and moving the bridge pickup into the middle slot. No woodwork modification needed. Want a bit more grit, change out the EMG for a DG-TC...Gives you the more aggressive tones by having the pickups both back. I have both an NG3 and a Combustion with a the NG2 pickups w/DG & I don't know that you'd miss having a third pickup. Here's mine:

You can even retain the 4-knob control set by stacking the mid/treble or mid/bass controls on the DG-TC if you want. Mine has a few more things going on, but totally do-able if you want.

...and yes, Candy-Tangerine was a limited run. Don't see too many of those around anymore.

I love that color. I never recall them saying "this is limited edition", but it sort of is in the sense that they haven't gone back and done that color.

I love the Nordenbacker pickup in my Rick and all the talk about them has me wanting to swap out the FD-3N pups in my NG-3 basses with them. Actually, I'd probably only swap the bridge pup since I normally use that one solo'd.


But the question is which Nord pup for an aggressive metal tone? Big Single, Big Split, Big Rig? The description of the Big Single sounds great, but since it's single coil, I'm worried about noise. Recommendations?

I know I’m gonna be putting a pair of big singles in both my combustion’s but if you’re just doing the one pickup I’d go with the big split.

I checked under the pickguard when I got it and could swear blind the cavity wasn't big enough to fit another pickup directly next to it but I might be imagining things. If I do have to route, I'd definitely be interested in swapping for an NG but I'm in the UK...
I did a few test recordings earlier and immediately noticed that my DingBanez (just... don't ask) has a more defined pick attack but I much prefer the overall tone of the Combustion, especially the low end.
seedoke - thanks, the switch is an active/passive toggle for the pre
