Dingwall Owners Club

A slight amount of extra relief under the B-string is normal and desireable. It sounds like you have a little more than "slight" so I recommend taking it to a qualified tech who can level the fretboard under tension to correct the buzzing along the G-string.
Thank you for your response!
Do you mean leveling the fretboard itself (by removing the frets) or just fret leveling?

That is what I would normally do with a secondhand instrument, but this bass is brand new, received it less than a week ago. I'm thinking about returning it and get an other one. What do you think?

Did someone say Capri Orange P???

I’ve had La Bella Low Tension flats on this for a couple months. Time to switch back to rounds. Is anyone using Elixir strings in their Supers? I used to love them in high school and I’m curious if I would feel the same today.

I believe Exlixir's were the first non Dingwall strings I tried on my SPJ5. I liked them/still have/need to revixit as they surely have a lot of life left in them even though it has been several years since I've had them on. I've been using DR DDT strings on the SPJ5 for years (dropped a halfstep) and really dig 'em on that bass. Bought a set of La Bella Deep Talking Strings...have been meaning to try, though no rush as I have two basses with flats on 'em at the moment. On my SJ5 I was a long time Ernie Ball user but tried a set of D'Addario EXL165 5-String Nickel Wounds and really dig these.

My friend JB uses Elixir string on his Super P and Super J

Has anyone tried the Super Series of Dingwalls and decided to go back to a long scale model? I’m thinking a Super PJ sounds like the ideal passive bass for me, for I’m worried I would miss the 37” B string. That is what made me fall in love with these basses in the first place. :)

Ideally, I would love to try a super out for a while, but I probably won’t have the opportunity to do so before taking the plunge and ordering a new one…

Yes! It’s here and it’s mine ;) ABZ 5.

Hello! Any Dingwall players who also use Darkglass gear, especially the X Ultra have issues taming harmonics when playing fingerstyle? If I play even a bit harder, especially on E and A strings I get these pinch harmonics. My action is not that low and playing softer is not really an option with the music style. I know that lowering the gain from the pedal helps a bit, but dont want to lower it too much.

Are you muting the strings with a rest stroke? There’s a good chance your muting of the E and A strings is on a prominent harmonic node. Playing with a lot of compression or distortion will bring up these harmonics that might be way quieter otherwise. Quick test is to move your right hand (assuming right-handed) position and see if it is still happening, and if they are the same harmonics or not.

Yes I'm muting with a rest stroke. It appears that the harmonics come in almost every position when I move my right hand. Actually I think it might be that the strings are hitting the upper frets and that's causing it. Maybe should try to adjust the truss rod for less neck relief then get the action a bit higher?

I would try muting with floating thumb first. You don't have to be super good at it, but it'll help narrow down the problem. if it's harmonics from hitting the upper frets, the neck relief won't do much. You'd need to raise the strings at the bridge saddles. Interested to hear your results because usually getting "muting harmonics" are specific to one note, where the second octave node falls under the finger you are muting with, but shift the note a half step in either direction and it goes away, all else else equal.

This ABZ is just crazy. It’s probably the lightest bass I’ve ever had at just 7lbs 13oz. And luminlay side dots is a nice feature. The only concern I have now is that the right hand position seems different from my other basses and the hand is resting on the bass body at different angle. It causes a bit of fatigue now.

Wow, that IS light. I’d never weighed any of mine before, but a Reddit thread today prompted me to break out the digital luggage scale, and your ABZ is a little lighter than my D-Roc (8.06#), which is my lightest 4-string (apart from an acoustic and my son’s Squier Mini P). My NG3 is also my lightest six-string, so light and great balance is clearly a Dingwall thing…still, your sub-8 pound five string blows my mind.

So, this is going to be an adventure.

So, the wires come out of the terminal on the 3X board, and simply get soldered to where the little sheet says, on a pretty much one-by-one basis, yes? So the two connections that don’t have dedicated lugs (B+ and N-) get soldered to any exposed portion of the white wire and black wire, respectively, yes? And the loose ends of the white and black wires go to wherever the 3x switch wires go (I’m guessing to the active passive switch, I didn’t look closely at those yet), yes?

Maybe these photos will help.
Maybe not.
I disconnected one lead from the existing switch at a time and connected as per Mo’s diagram.

everything you questioned above sounds right to me. I’d have to go back and look for your last question but I think so.

lol. I went back, searched for, and saved those same photos earlier as references.

Edit to add: it’s also fascinating to see how much differently yours is wired from mine. I wonder which caused more changes, the Bridge/Neck in parallel (IIRC, you said yours is series), or my request for a different order for the positions than yours. I’m not even sure they could accommodate my requested order, which is fine, if they couldn’t.

What was your order again?
