Ok thanks! Well someone told me he couldn't get a low action like on his Combustions, so I thought they maybe did not have the fret levelling the Combustions had.

Or perhaps, user error or bad luck :)

I confirm that I have never touched a D-roc before!
The action on my D-Roc 5 Standard can get crazy low, same or even lower than on my ABZ

Surprising since compound radius allows for lower action without buzzing (radius at heel/radius at nut should yield the same as strings spacing at heel/strings spacing at nut for even action throughout).

But also good to know as the lack of compound radius is one of the main reasons I haven't given in and ordered one of these myself - another being I expect the same bridges to be implemented on Combustions.

I thought I had read that the D-Roc 5 Standard had a compound radius (like the ABs), but the D-Roc 4 Standard did not.

Can anyone confirm?

The Hellboy has the compound radius - not the standard.

By the way Dingwall's compound has alway seemed excessive to me (25''/7.5'' = 3.33 so the string spacing should be over 3x wider at the bridge than at the nut, which it isn't).
I asked Sheldon about it during a live Q&A months ago where he confirmed my understanding of the concept was correct, but their stated radii also are, which seems mutually exclusive.
Does someone know what's up? It's not essential for me to understand, but I always prefer to.

Does anyone set up their Dingwall with a little fret clank? I love my jazz basses set up low with that little bit of rattle/buzz especially whe you dig in. I haven't tried it with my Z yet but may. It's just so good that it already has ridiculously low action with no buzz. I think it also has to do with the slighty higher string tension.

Anyone have a recommendation for strings that have slightly lower tension than the Dingwalls? Bonus points if they aren't really light gauge.

I'm too poor :( Plus there's a spector I'm eyeing currently which isn't exactly cheap either.
And that damn home studio which is still not finished !@#$

that’s exactly what I thought you said.

Thanks. Looks like an expensive addition. That said, I’d send my neck in for it to be done. I wonder if I can find my original drawing request.

edit: found it. Different then I recalled. It was less involved.

IMHO this bass has two choices that I would avoid. One is the high contrast wood, highlighting the taper near the players right arm (detracting from the amazing body silhouette), and the other is the non matching fretboard/neck...

It's funny, this also annoys me, apparently so much that I had a dream about it last night :
AB1 6 strings 3 pickups, bleached burl top, natural to purple burst (reverse ? not sure about the nomenclature but I mean purple in the middle and natural on the outside), natural body (ideally one-piece maple) to avoid the aforementioned visual problem, wenge neck, BEM fingerboard with purple burl solid blocks, and the same burl and natural/purple burst on the head.
I feel like I'm forgetting something but that was mostly it I think.

I was playing with the series switches and pickup selector but it all sounded the same - like progressively louder white noise, and that's the point where I woke up :( But it was sure nice while it lasted !

I believe the “Reverse” term is used when the darker colour is on the inside.

I have my combustion set up like that, it's usually tuned 1/2 step flat as well making it slightly lower tension. I've been looking for a slightly lower tension set for my other long scale for a while, just recently cancelled an order for TI rounds as they were not in stock (not impressed with a particular TB favourite string vendor for a second time, I won't be giving them any more business)

I think your best bet might be Newtone in the UK for a proper custom set in the gauges you want. Payson have a medium/light set but they are basically the same sizes as a standard set of Dingwall strings, I haven't tried them as they are just too expensive to ship here for a single set. I don't expect them to be any lower tension than the Dingwall strings with those gauges anyway.

There are also Dunlop's but I personally thought they were just awful and a few others had the same opinion.

If you find anything else out there let me know

Sounds good. I just ordered a set of the NYXL long scales. I don't expect them to be much different either but I play them on my standard scale basses and love them.

Also the old Reverb cut, it’s at least 10% or maybe closer to 15% these days. I suspect that is a big contributing factor as to why everything on there is usually priced as if it’s made of solid gold.

Yeah. I'm just going to try local groups and the Dingwall facebook group, if/when I decide to sell. Avoiding Reverb and I definitely won't give TB money either. eBay actually isn't too bad in fees. We'll see, I'm in no hurry to do it.

Reverb is only 5% now where E-Bay is currently 5.85% (many other things are up over 12-14%). Paypal, etc. adds 2.7-2.9% to that.

Speaking of strings, Stringjoy has a pretty neat tension calculator where you can build your own custom set.
Stringjoy Guitar String Tension Calculator

Just put in the scale length for each string and choose your gauge. And their extra long are wound to 39.5". However I have never tried them. One reason is because a custom set is $15 more than the SIT set that I use on my Dingwalls and I have no reason to change from perfection really :)
