Just picked up my 3rd Dingwall. I bought a 4 string D Roc over the weekend to give my my Combustion 4 and 5 a new friend.
I would like to put a detuner on the D Roc. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to find a smoked chrome detuner that will match the Hipshots that come on it?
Im also thinking about doing the 6 position switch. Is it worth doing? The thing I like about the 6 position is the ability to solo the neck p/up. Just curious if anyone has done it and if it makes a noticeable difference.

I added the 6 position switch to my D Roc 5 standard. I love being able to solo the neck pickup and it was a worth while mod...BUT... The D Roc cavity is thin and the switch is tall.

I had to bend down all the pins on the bottom of the switch to get it to work. It still made contact with the control cover shielding, so it shorted out until I put some black tape on the part of the cover that the switch was making contact with.

Still love it though...

There is no smoked chrome detuner. Either live with one off color or switch all your hardware out for black or chrome.

I was affraid of that. My OCD will probably over take and I will be replacing hardware or just tune on the fly . Thanks for your insight.

It's unfortunate too, shocking that hipshot hasn't done smoked chrome yet.

But can someone please clarify something for me: The internet seems to be divided around how the pickup switching on the D-Roc is set up. Did it change at some point, maybe? I keep seeing both of these diagrams turn up. In this case, the top one is supposedly the D-Roc, while the bottom one is the D-Bird, but in other places I find information conflicting this. Different YouTube demos will also give different information about the switching setup.

So which one is it?

Dingwall's web site seems to support the bottom diagram, so I would assume that's the correct one, at least for the current models?

And if the bottom diagram is correct, why is the Combustion layout different?

I have a D Roc 5 Standard, and it's the same as the D-Bird one in your first picture. The top part of the first picture is for combustions etc. I believe.

I did install a 6 way switch with mine to allow the neck pickup to be soloed.

It's the bottom "D-bird" switching.
An awesome selection of tones. Almost as 'powerfull' a bass as active basses I've had.
You won't be disappointed.

This is a guess, but my theory is that Dingwall tried to get all of the pickup options on the D-Roc to have roughly equal output, since there are less ways to balance them on a passive bass.

The reference to "D-Bird" switching refers to a prior version of the D-Roc, before Gibson got spooked by how the Dingwall design made their Thunderbird look outdated.

From an electronic perspective, D-Bird = D-Roc...although IIRC the original D-Bird had two pickups (bridge + middle) and it was only later that the neck pickup was added and the 3x setup became the new standard.

Powerful is the right word - my old D-Roc had a HOT output!!!

Rob Van Der Loo came up with the pickup wiring for the D-Bird/D-Roc I believe, it has nothing to do with active or passive it's just the configuration that he liked for his music so it ended up in the D-Bird and now the D-Roc.

There should be absolutely no confusion that a D-Roc comes with the 'D-Bird' switch and always has. There is some confusion over some NG3 runs which originally came with the D-Bird switch, they now come with the standard 3x unless you specify otherwise.

Bring your big wallet (and somebody else's probably), they only made customs and they are very rare.

Honestly, having had both the D-Roc is a superior design and would choose it every day over the D-Bird. I say that as someone who preferred the D-Bird shape. The current standard 5 models are super close to the Customs now with the new bridge and luminlay side dots.
