I think I read somewhere that first gen combustion necks are quick chunky compared to the newer combustions...was that true?

not really. The profile did reduce I believe but not enough to be concerned about.
For reference I love the Z neck, it being the thinnest and my fav but I have had some very fast and nice necks on a few different combustion models through the generations including 2 first gens.

If the truss rod works and she’s been taken care of well enough a first gen combustion is a fantastic instrument.

The whole point of introducing the SFII was to standardize the shells. I guess it's within the realm of possibility that they were custom made by Dingwall, but I'm from the Showme state - I'd need proof. I dig the red finish.

that’s fair. I’m on board with that but I don’t want to rule it out…. And I think this seller perhaps was a Dingwall employee which is why I also believe it possible.

Yes, but not enough. That's why I installed the audere I had planned to go into a P Bass

The tone was 250k if I remember correctly so I swapped it to a 500k and used an orange cap. Tone wise it sounded good but IMO needed an output boost.

I didn't notice it so much with mine compared to the two NG's I had.
I'd take an old school combustion with the rosewood fretboard over a maple NG any day of the week.

From what I recall of the very first Combustion models, Sheldon said they decided to barely tweak the profile by rounding the edges near the fretboard slightly OVER, and that small tweak made an incredible difference.
