Something like this one would probably need a bleached quilt-top with a super-custom finish. As I understand that the price goes up every time they have to change paints and nozzles.

Some of those finishes only work well on certain types of woods. I think I’ve settled on one or two solid metallic finishes that I’ve seen on Sklars, though.

Even if you picked the same colors as mine (feel free) you'd get something unique, but that would be super awesome with metallics. They have done some multi-colored Sklars. I can't seem to find any pics, but I've seen them (likely on this forum somewhere). I love candy tangerine. Some day I'll own one or re-finish my purple Sklar.

I applied block Neck Illusions stickers, and then Soopastah tech dude Mo Mina did:
  • 6-position select (BM series, BM parallel, Mid, BN series, BN parallel, Neck)
  • Series/parallel switches for each pickup
  • passive tone (stacked under the volume control)
  • Active/passive moved to a pull on the High Mid control
I can get close-enough Precision, MM, Jazz, and Wal sounds, and a lot more!

Is there any chance of getting some good pics under the hood? I’ve got a 6-way I have still to install, and I’ve been pondering adding some S/P switches to my NG3 when I do the 6-way install, and I’d love to see how the inside is arranged.

On a separate note (*Puns) D'Addario says that the Super Long set of the XL's will work on a 38" scale bass.. So I still have my fingers crossed

Super late to the party, but the D'Addario strings don't say that they'll work on a 38" scale bass. They're wound to 38" from ball end to taper, while a 37" scale bass usually requires a 38.5" - 39" winding. Otherwise normal DR strings would work, but their taper falls just a few millimeters short from the nut on a 37" scale B-string.

Yep. I just discovered that. But someone here said the Dingwall strings were actually made by D'Addario, so after all the repairs to the electronics, I will try an original set of strings as well

Looking at my electronics, can anyone tell me what original Dingwall Volume pots were? Were they Mini pots or like in my pic's above, the normal sized ones? Does anyone know if they are 50K for active basses or 500k for the passive? I am wondering if mine were actually replaced with incorrect pots?

I can’t recall seeing any multi-colored Sklars either, aside from the colorshift blue they do. That said, Dingwall clients have wild imaginations and Dingwall has the ability to do it, so they’re out there!

Hi Guys,

I've been obsessing a bit over multiscale basses and have been looking a Dingwalls in particular. Is there any kind of FAQ or cheat-sheet on Dingwalls that go into the differences between the various Canadian-made basses? Specifically, I'm trying to understand what differentiates the ABZ, the Aftetburner1/2, the Z, and the Sklar. I checked out the 'compare basses' on the dingwall website, but its a mess - the fields seem to swing from over-verbose to just a bunch of N/As. If there is a link handy that can give a decent overview of the differences, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Dingwall Designer Guitars - Wikipedia will give you a quick guide

The very basics (someone will be along to disagree shortly :)):
AB (ABZ AB1 & AB2) are all essentially the same save for some finish and chambering options.

Z & the Sklar are again basically the same save for mandolin frets on the Sklar and more available options on the Z. These two also have slimmer necks and different body shapes vs the AB range.

Sklar also only comes with SFII pups while Z comes with FDV standard, other options by request though.

For a bit of unconventional advice, email customer service and ask to be sent the price list. It will have quite succinct listings of the standard features of each, as well as noting which options can be taken on which models.

You can also use it to figure out what you want and can afford.
