Dingwall Owners Club

Thanks GW ! This is the fit that I was hoping for on the SJ and SP.

I know nothing about string manufacture but I suspect that thickness is a necessity with the nickels.

I know even less, but by God Almightness I do know what sounds good or doesn't and these are good, soft, they have similar tension than the original Voodoo Dingwall S/Steel strings but sounds beefier and bright at the same time, I don't have to repeat what other Nickel strings I tried and removed from my bass in less than 10 minutes because I thought they were pig ugly awful. LOL :ninja:

But yeah, these and the Sansone Strings are now on top of my list with the Sansone being the ultimate 24 karat goodness.

These are TI Jazz flats. The B is a whopping .136, and while I didn't enlarge the slot in the nut, it fits nicely. Any more cutting on the nut would have messed me up on the first fret anyway. The taper on the silk end was perfect. On the other end, I needed some shorter saddle screws. The action with the TI's came out super low, with minimum relief. This is the proverbial "butter" P/J.

I know the TI's are expensive compared to other sets, but I've found that I play them for years rather than months. I love the way they mellow into a fat old school sound. Brand new they are too bright, but they feel so nice you can enjoy working through the break in.

Now that I'm checking into it, the DR nickel Lowriders fit, as do the DR Sunbeams. I keep the old set of Lowriders around for a round wound option. The B strings could be just a tad shorter, taper of just a little sooner, but they don't have to wrap at full thickness. Both Lowriders and Sunbeams are available in different sizes at Bassstringsonline, and you can buy a single B strings.

Hey GW, is there any chance Sansone could get hooked up with Bassstringsonline.com for the customers in the US? Do they have a US retailer?

Hey Singlemalt, I now know Mr. Franco Sansone very well, apart from him being an absolute gentleman and quite a rare breed of perfectionist who takes pride in his manufacturing every one of his strings is hand made on a machine I'll show you a YouTube clip later when I get home, he is as willing to listen to people and to constantly research improvements in his products as Sheldon is in regards to his basses, at the moment I'm negotiating with UK's Bass Direct to start importing his strings in England however if you give me the details of the head Concho of BasssStringsOnline I can get him in touch with Franco and the two can start discussing their potential business. So yeah fire away and I'll anticipate it to Franco later tonight.

Cheers mate ;)

Re: the short-scale nickel fit issue: I would wait until Sheldon weighs in, or somebody calls him to enquire.

The Long-Scale nickels fit perfectly and sound great on my ABZ. I can't see him shipping something that didn't work, unless the supplier changed the spec on him. And if that happened, he'll take care of people.

I merely thought I had a bad OEM A string on my ABZ when I first got it, and he sent me a new string on spec, at no charge. Even though it turned out to be my embarrassing mistake (defective electronic tuner).

It's just the way they do business at Dingwall...

Any idea if an order "in the works" can incorporate the new options? I ordered two months ago so maybe it isn't that far along in the pipeline.

You should ask Sheldon & Co. how can anyone else know  lol! One would assume that unless your body has already been drilled it could be difficult, because Sheldon is talking about a complete new slimmer body like the new Super P's without tone chambers, so if your pre-ordered body already exists, you might be too late. to incorporate these new options, but like I said who am I to know, just ask the Boss if it's not too late, until then, you never know your luck....

I attempted to call Barry twice and only connected with his voice mail. He did send me an e-mail, from which I quote: "The taper goes to the post not in the post".

I flipped the picture over for easier viewing:

Assuming this string was tuned to pitch, it looks to me like it tapers down right at the post. It also looks like it could be made to go straight to the post instead of deviating toward the E string. Sheldon will probably weigh in before long...

By looking at this pic I understand what Barry says and I can see what he means, the part of the string which goes inside the hole in the peg is tapered, i.e. narrower, but as soon as it gets away from the peg it goes back to full gauge size, now I have to tell you that in my views the low B string it's a big ol string and it does not require more than one winding turn around the peg rest assure that once in the hole, that string is not going to shift, or pop out, hence one turn around the peg is more than enough. However I also agree that maybe the tapering should start a little bit closer to the nut, we are talking a small difference but perhaps as with all new things sometimes a design re-tweek should be necessary and I don't want to dare talk on Sheldon's behalf but perhaps he might give his take on the tapering of the low B on the Super J / Super P medium scale strings.

Zoomie this little issue should not put you off ordering these new Nickel strings, if you trust my advice, I really recommend them over the standard Voodoo Dingwall med scale strings, they add an extra pair of... cojones to your bottom end, I kid you not! :D

Its entirely possible that you're just in the queue after 2 months...talk to Sheldon and find out if they've started cutting...

Well, that was fast! I just got a reply from Barry.

No problem making changes and it will not change your delivery date. We will make your SJ5 the thinline with the Glockenklang 3-band

:D Awesome, very cool of them!

Regarding the Medium scale B-string. They are a first run with a new supplier and the taper length's a little off from spec. We've had zero issues with breakage and don't expect any. In the event anyone does have a problem, we will of course make it right.

In the mean time, in our opinion these strings sound significantly better than any other we've tested on the Super series. Not to mention the feel of the nickel is wonderful.
