Sheldon, thank you very much for the response.

I mostly play heavy rock with a pick, so would I be better off with the FD3s or Super-Fatties? Or is it simply a question of personal taste?

I also wondered if you would be able to put a reverse P in a Super J. That pickup arrangement is my personal favorite for pickstyle.

Again, thank you for taking the time to respond. It really makes me feel good about ordering from your company.

Here's the story...ordered the Super P pickups and tort pickguard from Sheldon. They included some 'brass barbs' for the pickup screws. Made the pickup install a breeze (after I read all the helpful posts about how to align everything!)

Soldered a couple of wires based on the excellent diagram provided. Swapped the neck from the Super P with the Super J (nice Indian Rosewood fretboard. The Super P is going fretless soon - after a 7 month wait :( !!!)

Added new Dingwall Nickel strings and plugged in...sounded great...except for the wicked buzz coming from all 4 pickup settings. Ack.

On the phone with Dingwall Tech Support (yay Jeff), who was so patient with me. Checked the output levels - OK. Sent tons of pics of the electronics - OK. Had never experienced this in the J config. The Super P is dead quiet thru the same rig.

Boxed up the body and shipped it to Sheldon's workshop. The local tech's would have taken one look at it and said, "nope, that doesn't look like a Fender.?"

My DIY project just got a lot more expensive.

Jeff looks at it and says, "a little more noisy than usual, nothing out of the ordinary. we'll replace the pickup selector switch, since we have a newer model. all better."

2 day delivery from Sakawhatever to Philly! Wow. Reassemble everything. Buzzes like crazy. All 4 pickup settings. Not a grounding issue. Turn the bass 180 and the noise goes away...hmmm.

Took the bass to rehearsal tonight - same amp, cables, etc. Dead quiet. :hmm: must be some funky electric fields or something going on.

Soooooo. I love the P/J config. Have to let the strings settle in. Sheldon and Jeff are fantastic to work with - even dealing with dopes like me.

You too can be a wannabe bass tech!

I'd go with FD3's but I'd like to hear what others on the forum prefer too.

The Super J bodies are being re-drawn right now. I can't commit to a Reverse P right at the moment. A Super P with an FD3 bridge pickup is in the works and it does come pre-routed for a reverse P. Passive only though.

It looks just like mine, only mine is not trans white.

When I plugged my SJ5 in for the first time at the Montreal dealer, I was picking up a radio station! It must have been in a hotspot coming off of one of the broadcasting towers off of the mountain or something and the shop being several floors up in a building close by. I haven't noticed any hum or interference since, although I do not play downtown very often.

I did have an issue with hum in the studio (before I was playing Dingwalls) many years ago and it ended up being related to having lights on dimmers. We did not know it at the time until my track had gone down, but I had to change basses from the one I was originally planning on using.

Sometimes I'll get a small amount of buzz in and out depending on my proximity to my amp when I'm using quite a bit of treble. I run FD-3's and an OBP-3 @ 18volts. It's never been anything but dead quiet in the studio and never been a problem on gigs. The way I see it, these pickups are wound to be full range and the preamps used are designed to take full advantage. When you've got these kind of electronics in a "high gain" type of situation there can be a bit of noise....and it's an ok thing.

YESSSSS!!!!!

Now, to figure out a color (hoping for a Capri Orange, but I'd settle for the Candy Tangerine that they had on some Combustions and the Sklar) and sell all my worldly possessions.
