Not a great photo but I’ve got errands to run before I go see Cory Wong tonight.

I forgot how slim AB necks are compared to my Super P (which is also perfect).

The blackburst looks a lot less purple than in a lot of photo I’ve seen. None more black, but make it classy. Haven’t owned a wenge neck Dingwall before but I love it very much. The ziricote fretboard has some nice color variation throughout.

This bass is a few years old as the headstock signature is real gold marker and there’s no reach reducing strap pin. I definitely want to put one on it eventually.

Given the nearly immaculate condition it’s in, I’m guessing towards the younger end. I suppose I could bug the shop with the serial number, but I’ll focus on playing it for now.

I’m still really interested in a 3X but this bass was available and within my ‘this year has been a big personal challenge and I just got a great bonus at work’ budget.

I’m perfectly ok to be told I’m wrong on this but I don’t believe it.

that very much looks to me like it has a grey stain on it. I’ve not seen a top so uniformly grey. Wood is not grey unless it’s dead and getting ready to rot and even then it doesn’t just have a tint to it unless it’s been exposed to weather for years like barn boards but even then you sand them down and the natural colour of the wood is hiding underneath.

I do agree the purple covers more area but those edges are tinted grey. I’d like to see it in a different light. It does look more natural towards the horns, especially the upper.

It may just be that particular picture because it’s darker than the same one I found elsewhere originally posted by Dingwall where it’s much brighter (below). This one conveniently has the finish in the description.

This was Rufus Mann’s bass (YTer) and he eventually sold it to another YTer. I posted the original picture because it’s more true to the color you see in Rufus’s YouTube videos, kinda like this shot (below).

Very classy, congrats! The cross-flames are lovely. I bet it sounds good too.

If the serial is below about 5200 it’s probably 2013 or earlier.
My ABZ has the reach reducing pin and that’s a 2013 build, my 2010ish one didn’t have it so it was introduced sometime between the two.

First Dingwall is in! Blackburst Combustion 6 with Pau ferro fretboard. Not as stunning as some designs here, but it's going to see lots of action so it's probably for the best (I write, as if I had the means to afford those ). Compared to my Ibanez SR506, my main bass and only 6 for the last eleven yers...what an upgrade. When I first got the Ibby I felt like the fretboard was a runway. After 15 minutes on the Dingwall, the Ibby feels like a guitar.

The B string is making me smile - the balance with the other strings, the usability and articulation of lowest notes...it's opening up new avenues. And the higher strings are equally sweet; clean chordal work is joyful.

Getting used to the fanned frets took no time at all.

The EMG preamp is fine, nothing to write home about, I'm making it work but it has some limitations. Definitely not transparent, though I don't mind. I still like it out of the box more than the DG pre for my uses.

I'm really liking it in passive mode, and I'm also liking it most in position 1: Neck. The two positions that combine two pups have an odd scooped sound. Makes sense for Position 2, Neck and Bridge. It's like a jazz bass with both pups on full, when there's great benefit to rolling back one of the pups to bring in more mids.

Position 3, Bridge and Middle, has an odd almost out of phase sound I don't think I like. It's more scooped, louder, and has an almost unpleasant upper mid thing going on. Through distortion it can certainly be powerful. Maybe that's a signature Dingwall tone though.

Is the stock Combustion position 3: Bridge+Middle in parallel or series?

And is the middle pickup wired parallel or series these days for Combustions? I've heard people say one or the other over the years

Given how much I'm liking passive mode, I'm rethinking my initial idea of using two NG2 rotaries to explore which positions I do and don't like, and instead giving a volume pot for each pickup, along with a 6 position rotary and tone control.

The 6 positions would essentially be for all on, and all series options:
1. All pickups parallel (using the 3 volume controls could blend combos as I like, I imagine I'd spend most time here)
2. Neck + Bridge Series
3. Neck + Middle Series
4. Neck in series with Middle/Neck in Parallel
5. Neck in parallel with Middle/Neck in Series
6. Middle + Bridge Series

Still figuring out how wiring for this would work, so it may be a nonstarter

Incredible live show. High energy, super tight band. He's got someone subbing in for Sonny on bass, but dude is a tremendous player with a couple odd basses. Monica Martin on vocals for a few tunes. They're playing again tonight, different set, so I'm going back!

And this beauty looks like it goes purple to natural rather abruptly BUT you can see the natural brown all the way around with only a slight grey shade in Between

I saw him play with Corey when Foreign Motion was still around. I saw them a couple times, definitely once at Icehouse, I think opening for Kamasi Washington back in 2015 maybe

I liked the bridge+middle in series position for distortion. very focus with the extra mids. I would love it more if there is no level difference between position 2 and 3.
