I know you're not talkin' to me - I can not restrain my body from joining in while making joyful noises with a Dingwall bass!

I'm a fan of the classic Maple/Ash and "Rosewood"/Alder wood pairings, so I don't see myself doing that. Plus, then the basses would be labled wrong on the headstock!
Are you bonding with your J? My curiousity was prompted by your comment that it would be the one to be liquidated to fund a P/FD3 in the event that you decided to commission one.
I'm giving you an A+ for these photos.The lighting is especially cool in the headstock comparison picture. I like how you got a gun metal effect with the chromed surfaces. It's interesting the light angle emphasized the lettering inside the scallop on the J. I've always liked the scalloped design of the Super series but I'm liking the new more rounded effect even more. I knew from the start that Sheldon's taste wasn't all in his mouth.
We have giant windows in our living room and I thought the lighting was good enough even with it being quite grey yesterday to take those pics. I could have brought out the DSLR, but the iPhone worked well enough for my purposes.
I like the Super J a lot, and haven't had as much time to play with it as I'd like due to work travel. On just feel alone the Super P's body seems to work better for me. Of course I've basically been playing it for a year straight so it could just be that I'm used to it. But the body of the Jazz doesn't quite lay against me as nicely and it feels different with my right arm placement.
Of course the Jazz also weighs about a pound and half more than the P, though I don't feel the J is heavy at all (its still just 9.5lbs).
Mainly I love the J at home, when I play by myself I love that middy solo'd bridge tone, but the P tone works much better in my Indie/surfy orginals band. So the P will always win out over a J if one has to go. Of course that's why a Super P with an FD3 in the bridge would be my ultimate bass. At this point though, I'm inclined to just keep the stellar pair and to not worry about that theoretical bass until I can afford to just buy it outright.

Absolutely. That is the only way to play bass......... especially a Dingwall.

Great fun is an understatement... like I said, it's been a loooong time since my last gig, and when I get into it, I get into it. My wife's friend said I counted as the bands backup dancer. I take that as a compliment.
My wife was disappointed though... she wondered why I dance with my bass but not with her.
I really enjoy the sound of the Dingwall through that Peavey rig... even though everyone claims that 2x15" cab is inferior to the 215D with Black Widows, but it works for me. It's funny to bring a 7.5 lb bass to a gig, while lugging 160+ lbs of amp.
I've owned several of the Peavey 215s and there's just something appealing about them; certainly not a hi-fi tone, but it certainly wedges itself into a mix.
What head are you using? I have an old Century 120-Series, and a Standard 260-Series...

There has been many a time in the past when I wished that I could dance with both simultaneously, but I never had a good wireless. Maybe you could 'put a bug in her ear'?
You have a very light one there! The lightest one I've owned was my first, an eight pound AB-1 five string. Back when my arsenal consisted of a '72 Jazz and '62 T-bird, I rocked a Peavey Centurion and a tolex era Kustom loaded with two 15" SRO's. It did pretty well keeping up with overly-loud guitar and drums, but I could have easily used two of both amp & cab. The drummer played mostly with the butt end instead of the tip for maximum loudness. Not much finesse...
I want an ABZ bad! I've checked out every youtube video I can find, but I wonder how you owners would describe the tone? Some videos the tone is actually really flat sounding, like a p bass with really dead strings. Some people might dig that tone, but that's not my thing. Would you describe the ABZs tone as modern?
I'd say it's modern in a way, but not the EMG way. Great clarity and evenness but no harshness. You've probably already found my samples but if not : (certain I used it on Nearest Hope - not sure if it was it or the Super P on Ride On)
I'm using a VB2 that I got a great deal on in the Classifieds. The head has lots if tone control without the pillowy, mushiness I've experienced with the big A tube heads. And it can definitely grind on the OD channel.
The cab has a great bottom without being too huge, and actually a lot of high content that's easy to EQ, without tweeter hiss and spank. Miss are great, but it's back breaking to load all that stuff!
The ABZ is stupid light for sure. When I saw the weight listed in the little tool kit, I nearly died.

Going through a dilemma right now. I picked up a super J/P 4 string used. love it, so I ordered me a custom Super P4 to go with it.
I took in on trade a 5 string p bass, fender american body, warmoth neck.
I believe I'm falling for a 5 string again and right now I love it. Don't know if I'll be deceived in the future.
So the dilemma, If this "new love" sticks, I have 1 used Dingwall 4 and one on order.
What should I do without totally funding a new custom order? I love the black and maple J/P I picked up and my custom order I figured couldn't be changed to a 5'er. Came up with a couple options:
1. Get over the J/P (hard to do), sell it and get a 5'er.
2. Try to sell my other cheaper stuff (including my new found franken fender p5) and get a combustion. (wouldn't be that bad of a loss on turnaround if 5 string didn't work out).
Been thinking about it so hard I'm literally getting a headache.

I am also currently specking a Super P 4 and I keep wrestling with whether I should make it a fiver. Fact is, I love fivers when I need it, but otherwise I like 4s when the extra string is not required or at least makes the song easier to play.
But I keep worrying that I might regret not just making it a five. You can always ignore the B if you don't need it, but hard to add one later.

I know! It's tough. I love that B&M P5 with blocks at Bass Central! Gorgeous! So many Dingwalls, so little money!
I would suggest selling what you need/want to so you can be ready to purchase a used combustion. They are the model that comes up for sale most often in the classifieds. After you score your combustion, play it a while to see if you really want to commission a custom. How is that for a plan?
Sounds reasonable. Might be what I end up doing. I just get an idea in my head and think it over a million and a half times until it drives me crazy.
