Love the banjo frets on the Afterburner IIs and wouldn't go back. In fact, my Super P/J 4-string has mando frets and I love them even more. It has allowed me to lighten my touch which has let me play a little quicker when needed.

Has anyone heard any specifications for a new Afterburner model called the "HS"? I saw the model listed on a dealer's information sheet and it specified that the Afterburner HS would have a Bubinga body with gloss finish. It looks like it is priced between the AB1 and the ABII.

Zoomie, so glad it is finally close to you . having been following this thread for awhile as a dingwall owner and the suspense is killing me and I,m not the one waiting on the bass like you. I can,t even imagine how you feel. I am sure it will be worth the wait. enjoy
It is NEVER worth the wait. Well it is, but only after the wait is over.
I am so hoping it arrives tomorrow. I have a huge church gig Sunday and I would love nothing more than to wear that thing out !

The smallest frets that I have ever played are on the SJ5. I too was a jumbo guy. Now, I have no desire to return to jumbos.

I am toying with the idea of purchasing a Dingwall, either a Super P, or a Super P/J. My current main bass is a Fender Am Std P5 that I modified to a P/J with Nordies and a 3 way switch. I am 85% P, 10% 50/50, and 5% J. I prefer the more compact P style body. What are your views on Super P/J vs. Super P for a guy like me?

Don't know how closely you've been following this thread lately, but Sheldon mentioned that there will be a P/J available with a P body and FD3 in the bridge for 2014. After getting a Super J, I too realize that I prefer the Super P body to the J body.
As a former Active Fender P/J owner and lover, be prepared to make space in your closet for your former baby, if you decide to order.
Upcoming Super P/J 5 seems to be right up your alley.

I've been enjoying awesome precision tone from the FD-4P in the neck position of my alder/maple/morado bronze SJ/P4 since the fall of '09. The body shape makes no difference to my ears. The 1/4" difference in placement on the P vs. J will give a bit more mids from the P's sweet spot. My eyes like Sheldon's take on both J and P bodies. It is going to be cool to have my favorite precision pickup in a beautiful Super Precision shaped body!
Sheldon's pickups are killer and a crucial part of the whole. The FD-3 at the bridge is actually a 'reverse-precision' inside its shell. They sound great in the bridge position.
I have one of his five-string precision pickups on an ash/maple Super J/P. It is an absolute tone monster!

One of the things that is interesting is that a couple of members here felt the Super P was even more comfortable than the Super J body. The Super J is the most comfortable bass that I have ever played. 4-5 set gigs are no sweat. Really curious if the Super P can possibly be more comfortable.

I don't think anything has been mentioned so far.
There have been several runs of ABs that are between AB-I and AB-II. AB-I Elite and AB-1.5 spring to mind. They might have been dealer exclusives, not sure about that. Both were made a decade ago or so, and dealer exclusive series with certain features/tops did pop up every now and again. This could be one of those. Just guessing, Sheldon would know. I just responded because your post was getting lost among other conversations.
The model was listed on a new 2014 dealer price list. I've been working with a dealer on pricing out a new AB1 and the "HS" popped up on the new list.

I just got an email from Barry Lamb. The new Afterburner "Heavy Solid" will weigh in at 10-11 lbs. It sounds like it will be a nice option for those that prefer heavier solid body basses and/or de-tune. Very interesting but I think I'm going to go with an Ash body on an AB1.
