Since I'm already going for an x-top, I'm thinking about matching block inlay. I think burl maple might look nice on wenge? Any downsides besides the price to not want block inlays?

Blocks with binding look real nice at least on a standard FSO, not sure about an Effigy, the new school design might clash with the old school blocks. Would need to see some mockups.
I agree that the charcoal render looks great. I wonder what a Texas Tea color would look like on it, basically a charcoal with a little brown and gold in the paint.

I have matching speedo bars with burl wood on a wenge fretboard on one of my Zs. Apparently they might not do this anymore though, as I tried to get that on my newest Z and it was just too much of a PITA or something. Which is totally understandable, cutting burl in those small shapes probably is difficult. Or maybe it was my particular burst of colors that wasn't feasible. Blocks, I think, would look great if they match

Hey if anyone is looking to trade a 5 string NG3 for a 6 string NG3 - i'm very interested. I've developed an issue with my fretting hand due to the 6, I need to stick to 5's. I've got the Gold one, excellent condition, never gigged, dingwall knobs, can add Canadian FD3's to sweeten the deal if yours has upgraded pickups.. Keeping the 6 string Z for now, but could possibly be swayed into trading for a Z5 if its the right bass. If interested in dicussing this further, please let me know.

I heard that was the reason why blacked out necks are no also longer available.. which sucks because I was thinking of doing a ABII build after my current Z is done but to do what I want it would need a blacked out neck.
They should just charge more money to make it worth it. But I can see the rational considering they have been trying to get their build times lower..

Keep in mind that's pure speculation on my part. They did TRY to at least do it for mine at request, but, in the end we went with the nice blue ones instead -- which honestly, likely looks better, for this color, anyway. The Bloodmoon Z does have them and I'm grateful for that.
I'd hate to be in Sheldon's shoes of trying to control time for delivery, cost, and options -- all things that customers have strong opinions about. Barely a Dingwall thread happens here without someone complaining about price or wait time. Trimming options should help with both of those, and maybe if someday the wait list becomes manageable, it can turn more into custom shop than "to spec" type orders.
With all this talk of the Effigy‘s visibly maple neck heel I wonder whether maple fretboards may be an option. I remember my surprise when I unexpectedly saw a D-Roc with a blonde board (and headstock!)
Not currently but probably in the future. Wood choice at the moment is one: alder body, maple neck, wenge board.
A couple questions for you Dingwallers with Combustions or AB1's: I had an early passive AB1, ordered new at the time (this must've been about 15-16 years ago if memory serves. I let it go after a very short time 'cause I just wasn't using a fiver much at all and as a result I never really bonded with it. I mean, I barely played it. Long story short, here I am now using fivers all the time and contemplating another Dingwall. Two questions: my AB-1 was the passive two pickup version. I most definitely got what I'd consider a "P-like" tone out of it if desired. I don't really want a Super P - I have plenty of Pbasses, plus I want the "full Dingwall" experience--the 37" B. I'm leaning towards a Combustion, or new custom AB1. (The Nashville model looks interesting but I don't love the pickguard). Is it still the case that I can get that "P-esque" tone out of one of these? (Please I don't want to go down the "if you want a P, get a P" path--as I say I have several P's already). Is a 3 pickup version much more advantageous than the 2 pickup? If you play with a pick (as I do about quite a bit) does that middle pickup interfere?(I ask because I've played basses with ramps in that middle position and my pick would make too much contact with the ramp for my taste--maybe not a deal breaker). Any 2 cents welcome (except "if you want a P sound, get a P"

Any of the 5ers with a P-Tone pickup are going to get you really well covered, IMO. I have a P-Tone in an old AB1 (probably similar era to yours) and it is super convincing, with the Dingwall flavor on top. Others can comment on 2x vs 3x pickups for it, but, I think a 2x with PTone in the neck spot would not disappoint. The one with the P-Tone started life passive (well, had the BluEQube), but I added a Glock 2 band to it.

The 3 pickup models have a “stingray” selection and the 2 pickup models have a series setting that is darker and louder than the parallel 2 pickup setting. Get the 2 pickup model with p-tone pickups and you’ll have a killer p bass sound, a “more” sound in series and a good enough J sound in parallel. P for the rock tones, j -ish for more modern stuff, and passive is fine.
If you want the flats on a p bass tone, get a Super P. I tried flats on my ABZ and didn’t like them.
FWIW...I've got an ABZ5. I have a P-tone in the neck and the stock pickup in the bridge.
Whenever I don't engage both pickups (series), I get flak.
