I didn't want to butcher the original but I wanted a different electronics package...so...

Turner multicoil pickups paired with an underhill preamp.

It sounds just like I hoped, I can't want to test it out next practice.

It is my first build ever, and man did I learn a lot. Lots of imperfections in there, but that doesn't really matter to be as from 3 feet+ away you can't really tell.

Big shout outs to @slowburnaz for all his help (and patience) as he help outline options as I was drawing it up and to @Bruce Johnson for his write up on painting (https://www.talkbass.com/threads/us...nd-varathane-wb.1116168/page-11#post-18172153)!

I wonder if anyone’s ever powder coated their hardware a different color…

Sheldon said he drew from the tone and resonance of marimba bars for the body of his new Effigy. The Dingwall website lists swamp ash and Fijian mahogany as body wood choices while I heard from a dealer that the first year of production (2026) would use alder bodies to get the fabrication process fine-tuned before offering other woods. I don't have the final word but wondered what the tonal differences are between marimba bars made from alder, swamp ash, and mahogany. And yes, for a marimba bar, wood type does make a difference because of different densities, stiffness, and internal damping.

Obviously, a rosewood body would be too heavy and impractical for any bass guitar, but for a body engineered to capture some of the resonant qualities of a marimba bar I find this spectrum interesting. Gotta hand it to Sheldon for pushing the envelope with the application of novel and useful engineering concepts.

I just received confirmation from Dingwall that swamp ash and Fijian mahogany are the only current body wood choices for the Effigy so the website is correct.

I suppose your price quote includes VAT, customs, and a profit margin for Musifacts as the EU distributor.

What kind of D-Roc do you have on order and when is it due?

A few options that cost extra, like a burl top. It's not only the price, not entirely sure about the fluted top and build in distortion. It's supposed to be done somewhere are the end of the year. So at least in time for when they start making them.

Not sure if this has been shared already, but apparently FDVs are in risk of being discontinued. See comment section here:

Hopefully it's just temporarily, and they have plenty FDV soon again. Price of cobalt has doubled in a year, which is one of the main components of the alloy. https://www.magnet-sdm.com/cobalt-price-trend/

Powder coating adds considerable thickness and the hardware will be unlikely to function. Clearances for powdercoat need to be designed into a part before it is machined. You could consider looking into Cerakote ceramic coatings as an alternative that is both thinner and more robust than powdercoat.

You will need to strip the old hardware, bead blasting is likely to be your best bet.

But, it is possible that the result may not turn out how you expect. Just cautioning that you should be prepared for the possibility of being disappointed if you go this route.

So according to John Fox the reason why FDVs are being discontinued is a global supply shortage of the Alnico magnets. What a shame. I have had Dingwall basses with FD3s, SFII, and my current SJ5 has FDVs, which have become my favorites (especially paired with the DG preamp). They are the closest thing to vintage Fender Jazz pickups IMO. BTW that spalted maple top in John's YouTube video is gorgeous. As you can see from my avatar I also have a spalted maple top, although the characteristics are very different. No two pieces are the same. Thanks for posting @IvanBassist

Does that mean they are going back to Neodymium for the P pickups?

Sorry, I took a long break from all social media It is black and I do still have it. I bought a sheet of acrylic to make a clear pick guard, but it's still sitting there untouched.

No worries. I was looking for one of those but decided to have a custom one made.

I just want to say - without naming names - that I'm grateful for Dingwall's execution on Canadian orders. I know the wait time is long and really tests a person's patience, but, you know at the end you're going to get what you ordered one way or another. Seeing the handful of other shops who aren't consistent, or wholly shut down for years and are just now "getting back to orders" makes me appreciate the stability that Dingwall offers. Yeah, we all wish things would move faster when we're in queue, but, I'd take the stability and safety over speed.
