[NOLA Bass]

My problem.. I play in multiple projects, each with their own tuning. My reggae NG3 bass is standard with flats, KK3 V2 is for a band that's half step down, KK3 V1 is tuned ACGCF, the SP1 is standard but I need rounds for that project and I do fly gigs with it since it's the "cheaper" DW. I can't stand just "tuning down", I much prefer playing a bass that's set up for the tuning I'm in.

The new Z is standard, but I have no idea what I'm gonna play that bass with. It sounds very different from the rest with the Neve/SF2 combo.

I agree. My metal band tunes C standard, so my string choice and setup is specifically for that.

SP1 players, how high do you set your pickups? I haven’t touched the setup on my new SP1 yet, but I found that when I play with a pick, especially the D and G strings, I tend to hit the pickups with the pick as they are quite big. Clearly a different approach than on my Fender P. I guess I need to adapt my playing style a bit, maybe lowering the pickups would help? So what’s the recommended height on this particular bass?

Really been bonding with this bass lately. I've had it for about a month now and it has kind of become my go to for my jam band. Great playability, simple and effective electronics, and just an overall great bass. I'm off to rehearsal and it's the only bass I'm taking. It's been gigged once and will get it's next on Thursday.

My two bands are playing back to back at Slim's Last Chance here in Seattle. They were once featured on Guy Fieri;s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Known for their chili. Looking forward to rocking this bass.

Been on a Pink Floyd kick lately. Put the Stainless Steel Dingwall strings back on earlier today. Didn’t dig em before. Like em tonight that’s for sure.

As usual, no effects or processing. Neck pickup in passive. Moises app taking out Guy’s perfect bass line and adding my own flare.



I keep toying with the idea of getting my name in the hat for an Effigy. But I’d have to let the NG3 and my fretless Stingray go to make a sizable dent in the cost of a custom… and I don’t want to do that lol.

No the SP1 line don't have reinforcement bars installed, just the truss rod.

Does the D-Roc have the reinforcement bars?

Has anyone put a black pickguard on their green SP1 yet? Curious how it looks vs the stock gold, which I'm not 100% loving on mine (maybe if it were more of an anodized look than sparkle on top of the green metallic).

Kinda wish some sort of parchment / aged white was an option, too.

WD Music can make it happen. They have LOTS of options on their website. Though Dingwall isn’t a brand they hav listed, you can send them a tracing of your pickguard OR send them your pickguard (what I did) and they’ll mail it back to you along with your new one.

Update on my NG3 weird A sound.

I've had the wiring/pickups reinstalled. Didn't really help, I don't think.

I've had a setup, several sets of fresh strings, adjusted pickups heights, swapped the bass saddle, little bit of alfoil in the nut slot (basically two 'layers, so pretty thin) done just about everything I can think of short of swapping out electronics, levelling frets, doing the nut, etc.

I can't shake this weird A string sound.

I've attached a range of playing. I'd love if someone else could lend their ear to this and tell me what they think.

The strings are maybe a few days old. The issue is most obvious in the file named "Problema".

It's exacerbated when playing harder, I think.

My setup is:
String heights, measured with feeler gauges between the 12th fret and string:

G 2.25mm
D 2.4mm
A 2.55mm
E 2.6mm
B 2.85mm

Pickup heights, measured between pole location and string, fretted at the 24th are:
Treble - Approx 3.5mm
Bass - Approx 3.9mm

Fairly uniform across Neck, Mid, Bridge.

Signal chain is very clean - Bass, Anagram with no blocks (just used for tuning), Scarlett 4i4, Recorded into Reaper.

I've tried lower action, lower and higher pickup heights. I've tried lowering the string tree.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe the nut is a bit funky. The recordings have playing on the open and 3rd fret (should be obvious), so if someone can give an objective opinion on whether it goes away there thatd be good because that would indicate a nut problem.

I swapped out the base plate of the single bridge since it looked a bit eroded.

It shouldn't be a fret buzz issue because it's present on the highest string, not the lowest.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe its uneven wear on the strings, but I wouldn't get as clear of a G then since I use that the least.

I've emailed Dingwall directly to get their thoughts.

I'm pretty lost here and it's really ruining any motivation I have to play. I don't know if this is a new issue or something I've just never paid attention to. I'm wondering if it's normal and I'm just completely overhinking it or fixating on it.

I've had the bass for around 3 years, only owner. 3rd PUP was installed not long after I got it, so I'm not sure if it's that.

Could use some wisdom and more experienced ears.

Never thought of mailing the actual pickguard to them! Always hesitated for instruments without listings/templates on their site, since I don't trust my tracing abilities hehe

I indeed hear it on the A string on the one recording so, you’re not crazy. There’s a slight buzz in the signal just after the initial note is played. To my ears it doesn’t sound like a sympathetic vibration or rattle coming from the bass. It sounds electrical to me… BUT… I’m no expert.

It does indeed, the D-Rocs have two-way truss rods and reinforcement rods.
