I spent some quality time this weekend with my 4 & 5 string SJ/P's adjusting the 'volume' (via height adjustment screws) of the bridge pickups when in series with the precision pickups. I adjusted both down a bit to dial back the piercing high end energy they can bring. The series settings now bring a slightly brighter, fuller tone than soloing the precision pickups without the potential for decapitation or piercing of ears. I like 'em even better now.

I will keep that mind when I make the jump.

Typically, I'm either solo'ing the neck pickup or kicking into series when I'm playing either of these. I rarely use the parallel setting and never solo the bridge pickup. It takes me a disturbingly long time to 'see' obvious solutions sometimes ( ), but I'm glad it finally occurred to me to adjust the bridge pickup heights 'to taste' in series mode.

Oh what to do.. Received confirmation from Barry that I can't send my SPZ4 in and have a FD3 put in. I'd have to order a new one. Contemplating selling it to fund this order but it would leave me Dingwall less until my 5er comes along in summer.

Just a heads up, I might be listing this for sale. Confirmed with Barry that it was shipped form Canada on 09-19-13. So its just 5 months old. I love it, but my sound needs calls for a bridge pup.

Don't sell it! Buy the FD3 from Dingwall and have a qualified luthier do the routing and install, the Canada shop is just way too backed up with new builds to take on anything else...however, if you decide you must sell it, kindly reach out in my direction first

Hey Espresto, are you looking for stainless steel or nickel strings?

I've used Circle K balanced nickel and all the Payson nickels. I'm really digging the Payson reduced core nickels. I liked the Payson medium lights as well. The medium light were closer to the Circle K as far as tension, but sounded more full. The reduced core adds a little more stiffness and a more solid thunk.

I've had the reduced core on for months and they are going strong.

There are also new Dingwall nickels I have yet to install.

Bassstringsonline.com carries the Paysons and identifies other sets that fit the long scale Dingwalls. Infeld superalloys in extra long scale lengths are also a nice nickel wound choice.

I hear that Sansone has sets available in the UK. I haven't seen them at Bassstringsonline yet.

It wont be for at least 60 days. I have been so busy at church that if anything else comes up, Moses is going to roll in and yell, "Let my people go!"

I am redesigning my pedal board, which now calls for a bigger board and a new PS.

We have gone down a rabbit hole at church attempting to bring IEMs in to the mix, which has caused a long term sound system redesign in the thousands of dollars. Thousands that we don't have, of course.

Mark is wrapping up my new DuallyT and when it's done, I'm trying to figure out where to find the time to make a mad run to Nashville.

And on top of all that, I cant decide if I want to install a Retro J during the Super J conversion.

Fortunately I just grab Super P5, forget all my woes, and grip and rip.

My advice to you Zoomie, is not to fit a J retro but to keep it passive, let your pedals and amp do the rest but keep the sound naturally passive at the source. Amen!

Yup, 'busy' is your operative word.

Our sanctuary is so small, I do fine with spill from our keyboard player's monitor and the right main speaker.

I had a U-Retro in a five-string Kinal I played a few years ago. Sounded fine as I recall. It's nice being able to boost or cut anywhere in the sweep of the midrange control. It would be nicer, IMO, if the bass and treble controls could cut as well as boost.

When the ground is moving and paradigms are shifiting, it's good to have a SP5 to grip & rip! You are blessed.

The eBay Super J arrived today... No pics because I was too busy playing it. Perhaps in the coming days, but everyone knows what it looks like already. It arrived in good shape and everything seems to be in working order. Yay!

First impressions: waaaaay different from an ABII, which I suppose should be obvious! I was hoping for something that would approximate a vintage Fender vibe, and it does so better than I expected. I'm not yet sure that I love it though... I need to live with it for a few days to see how I'm feeling. But that's not a bad sign - I usually take a little time to warm up to new instruments, including the ABII I already have and adore.

One thing that was definitely a surprise: the bass is VERY gold in person. I think "bronze" is not at all descriptive. But beggars can't be choosers, and if it feels right and sounds right I can live with the color.

I spent some more time with it before work this morning, and I think it just needs to be restrung and set up. I'm not sure what strings are on there now or how old they are, but the tension is very high - I'm really feeling the effects of playing in my left wrist today, which never happens with my ABII despite the longer scale. Occam's Razor suggests that the problem is not the instrument itself but the way it has been configured. So I ordered some Dingwall strings this morning to bring it back to "stock" and I'll go from there.

All other aspects (electronics & sound, fit & finish) are characteristically outstanding. I'm digging the sound, I'm digging the smaller scale, I'm just not digging the effort required, but that is something that I can change.

Will keep y'all posted...

That has got to be strings and set up. Both my Supers are effortless. So much so that I go back and practice scales on my grove 51p for exercise!

I'd pop new strings on ASAP. Super J's are really sensitive to strings they sound awesome with the right ones and so so with the wrong ones.

My first recommendation is Dingwall strings. Second would be DR Lo-rider ML.

Can anyone give some info on the older 90's Z models? Approx value, what to expect quality wise, etc. I imagine they are no joke if kept in good condition.

I agree. I really like the set of nickel wrapped Dingwall strings as well as the traditional steel strings.
