Dingwall Owners Club

Calvan, for me the only time I notice the fan is when I go down for a low F on the E string. Even that wouldn't be a problem if I didn't still play my '78 PBass as much as my Afterburner. Sheldon has a nice curve on the back of the neck down there that you can use to reference. A little like that on a Double bass. When I play nothing but the Dingwall for a few days, the Fender feels funny. The thing is, the neck is so nice on the Dingwall (frets, contour, spacing, etc...) that it always seems worth the effort to acclimate.

Hey Chris!

Just wanted to compliment you on your tasteful playing! Your Dingwall sounds great!

Thank you for the compliment. Being surrounded by people like that at church, really force me to play better.

i have a question. sorry if it's been asked before, i don't have time to read the whole thread. was there any trouble getting used to the fanned frets? or is there much of a difference at all? i'm asking in respect to your fretting hand, not string tension or anything like that. thanks!

I have to say, that it really does not take much time at all to get used to. I have only had my DW for about 3 weeks now and it feels completely natural. The biggest hurdle is going down to the first position. The low C or F, and wayyyy up high takes some getting used to. I found that NOT looking when I am up near the 24th fret makes things a lot easier. Everything in between is super comfortable and feels very normal. There is something to the neck shape/taper that really does assist in making it easy to play.

If you have a chance, pick one up and just play it longer than a few minutes. I love my DW, but I still have a couple regular basses too.

I'm having a huge Dingwall G.A.S right now. If I only had the money for a Super (P)J...

My Dingwall isn't currently my "working" bass, so I have to noodle with it at home only when I have the time. I did that one day and realized (once again) that it's by far the best instrument I have right now (and most likely the best I've ever played so far).

BTW, this topic isn't helping my G.A.S at all. :D

Any reason you're not playing your Dingwall out? I would think it would be a good fit for your band.

Hey all. I finally became a Dingwall owner a few weeks ago and got to take the bass to my favorite gig. I got the clips posted on youtube if you wanna check it out. I got pretty much no face time, but the bass has some cool shots. Not the best sound (dang choir), but there are a couple tracks where you can hear the bass in the mix. The second link probably has the best mix with bass.

Incredible sound!

The songs we play don't mean much more for the bass than pounding the D-string (we downtune a step) constantly. I could most likely do just fine with a 2 stringed bass. The tonal quality & the extended range of the Dingwall wouldn't add anything to the mix, except an A-string to skip on my way to work with the D-string. :D

It's just easier to take the 4-stringer, grab a few beers and beat the heck out of those 2 strings I need. ;)

Hey everyone, So I think ever since I see dingwalls I've always wanted one now at the end of the month I will have enough cash to buy one but now im not sure about it. I've played a couple afterburners and they where both really easy to play but now that it comes down to buying one without playing it I'm not sure if I should get it. So what I wanted to ask you guys is did any of you buy a dingwall without playing it? did you have an regrets about buying one? and I want an afterburner 1 if that makes a differnece.

Almost all of us bought Dingwalls without trying the specific bass we ended up with. :) So, We've all been there.

If it helps you, Sheldon's QC is very good and very even. Pretty much all of the AB's are set up and built to very close tolerances, so, if you've played one of them, you know what you're going to get.

I bought my 1st one w/out ever playing one. I just saw the pics and knew that the fanned frets would cure the problems I was having with parallel fretted basses. All 3 of those are gone btw.;)

Then I bought a fretless fanned sight unseen.

I'm a relatively new owner of a Dingwall and I bought it with out ever having played on one or any bass with fanned frets before. I did mega-research and asked everybody and their mother whether they had a problem with switching to fanned frets. It was almost unanimous that they didn't have problems. Now, having bought one, they were all RIGHT! It took me no time at all to get used to the fanned frets and I believe they are actually easier to play than a straight fret bass. The bass overall is a work of art and plays, feels and sounds amazing!

If you are interested, Gary over at GuitarX.com is having 12 Limited Edition Afterburner II's commissioned. Mine was #4 and there are 8 left to be made. You get to choose the color, # of strings, and other items. Check it out!

I played one a couple years ago at Ed Roman's in Vegas and was hooked. I traded for my Afterburner 6 about a year ago after only seeing a few pics and my recollection of the one I played in Vegas and I must say, I was even more impressed after I got it. I have had to downsize my arsenal in the past year due to market conditions from 13 to 3 and this Dingwall isn't going anywhere. As a matter of fact, once things turn around, I plan on getting another...and another...and another!!! :bassist:

Well yesterday I took a drive to Calgary and I came home with an afterburner 1 after waiting a couple years to get one I finally did. So now that I have a dingwall could I get a number?
