So Bob, the honeymoon period is over - is this one a 'keeper'? I am still highly intrigued by ash/wenge combination. It looks totally HOT with the transparent white IMO. Steve Rolfeca opined that the solid wenge necks sound a bit compressed to his ears. I assume this would be in comparison to a mostly or all-maple neck. I'm still trying to imagine how neck compression would sound...

Just replied to your PM. Been traveling for business and haven't spent any time on the boards.

I can't say enough how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Super P! The wenge board is silky smooth as a baby's bottom and it just sounds the growly bomb. I would not change a thing. Without having a Super P with a maple neck, I just can't compare the two any meaningful way though. But I would not want it to sound any way other than what it sounds like anyway.

I need to shoot some pics of my own, both in normal mode with the tort guard, and then the reverse P mode with the Baltic amber guard. I'm going to try to get that done this weekend, as I want to hear it in reverse mode for my country band rehearsal next Monday.

One thing I did notice, though, was that my ABZ had a much lower output than some of the passive basses I tried. That has also been mentioned by a couple of recording engineers when I've been in the studio.
Has that happened to you guys, too?

Heck no. My AB1 is pretty hot.

Ivan it's all to do with the height of the pickups, your ABZ5 and mine are of similar year of manufacture, these neodymium pickups are very sensitive, and the correct gap between them and the string is very important to the volume response, even if you change string gauge I would advise you to readjust the pickup height to match.

Truth. Very slight adjustments can make a vast difference. Sheldon includes that wrench for good reason.

Smoking hot AB-1 pups.

I use the pickup adjusment wrench as a gap feeler to set the treble side of the pup, string pressed on 24th fret. Bass side to taste.​

This varies with different strings. I have an old tape deck with Vu meters that helps with balancing the output.

Per the conversation on the FB side: Aesthetically these are doing less for me, with the cosmetic changes. That said, the pick ups, placement, and the Darkglass pre keep this at the top of my list for basses to check out. With the carbon fiber guard I was leaning towards the green (if maple is the only option), with the new black guard though, this blue is my favorite I think.

I can understand people discussing the 'dark' fretboard v. the maple. I know that having the instrument set up properly with an F# tuning IS an option (I believe it's 100$ to have the shop do that).

In terms of the fretboard wood choice, I understand that maple may be the best tonal and structural option, but Sheldon usually finds a way to cater to the requests of the masses if those requests come in quantity. Maybe not for this run, but in the future. I suggested an NG-3-PRO model to offer some of those things, but that might not fit into the production realities of the 'backside' of the situation.

*Edit: The pickguard IS the CF-look, it just didn't show up well in the photos...

Good to know! This is my action and pup height at the moment. Will try to mess around with it a little bit when I come back home from Spain
