In my ninth month now. Still awaiting its arrival from the factory. Last I was told it was to be enroute from Canada.

Chomping at the bit...

In the meantime I picked up a Warrior Dran Michael 5er on impulse. Not fond of its thin neck so I will be selling. Just thought I'd give it a try.

My suggestion is to avoid the classifieds while awaiting your Dingwall

Putting all my spare pennies away to pay for it. I am quite happy with the gear (including "timber") I have right now so there's no temptation to buy anything else.

The last few weeks are the toughest

I had gotten the two week count down from Barry about a month ago before he realized an error had been made due to the changes to the order; I originally spec'd out an ash/maple Super PJ, but after procuring one used I changed the order entirely to an ash/wenge 3X Super J.

It's still two or three weeks out, but the ABZ5 I just picked up from the classifieds that's arriving tomorrow should help

Sorry to hear about the error and resulting delay. Miscommunication happens, unfortunately. When Bass NW called to tell me that my beautiful trans-black AB-1 was ready to ship, I had to tell them that it couldn't be mine because mine was Indigoburst...

I'm definitely not complaining, I literally changed the entire order a week or two before they actually started construction on the neck and body.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have the bass in my hands already, but the way I see it...if you have the money to spend on a custom 'dream bass', you really have no reason to complain about anything

I didn't hear a complaint. I don't know what happened with my order and don't care. The additional wait wasn't much longer and the bass completely worth waiting for.

I have a question for those that have experience with the older SJ4's and the newer ones. Have the neck profiles changed at all over the years? I had an '06 with an aggy pre. I loved the feel of the neck in the upper frets. Was curious to if they are the same now? Or would this be a Sheldon question?

See I'm having this dilemma while waiting for my SPJ5 to reach its rightful place in my hands. I believe I want another SJ4 and the one in the classifieds keeps screaming at me. Sometimes on certain songs it just feels good to get down on a four string.

There's also another bass I'm eyeballing. If any of you are familiar with the Z1 Ziricote "Zebra" that Brian at The Low End Bass Shop has. It's also calling out to me. I just don't know what the difference is in feel and sound compared to my incoming SPJ5. I love the feel of a pbass 5er. That is what drew me to playing 5 strings. But I can't help but think about how awesome having that Z1 would be.

Anyways... If any of you all know about the SJ4 neck profiles please chime in.

Just put a brand new Bartolini NTMB pre amp in my pre-fire Voodoo Prima last night. I had always loved the way my bass sounded, as it was very versatile and seemed to work in any mix. BUT the original preamp was just too wimpy to get me into the NASTY range I knew it was capable of, and the pre did not have the gain pot that the Barts have now.

So I performed a preamp-ectomy and transplant (based on Sheldon's advice) and the results are simply stunning! Not only did it solve the low output problem, but it has converted my VP into a bass that can still be very polite, but can now get to be a downright nasty beastie with the twist of a few knobs. It also totally eliminated some noise issues I was having as well. I also opted for the Push-pull vol control for active/passive operation, which it did not originally have.

Can't wait for my next rehearsal!

I'm with you on rockin the four bangers brother! I love Dingwall fivers and sixers as much as the next Dingwallian, but I love Sheldon's fours just as much. They are far superior to any other fours I've played, and totally agree that if you don't need a five for a particular song, hit that four HARD!!!!

Sheldon would surely know, but Barry's more accessible. I like all of my Dingwalls and would be very hard-pressed to pick a favorite, but if I were forced to sell them off , I'm thinking that my SJ/P-4 would be the last to go.

Seriously, if I were to add another Dingwall, it would probably be a SUPER J. Although I have to admit the Nolly Combustions have bored a subtle but undeniable bit of a hole in my head recently!!

Thanks brother! I had contemplated replacing the pickups, but Sheldon has stopped making his pickups in the size shell that I would need. He was kind enough to offer a quicky limited license to Mr. Nordstrand to put them into a shell of that size, but that seemed a lot of bother. Besides, I like the sound of the Bart PUPS actually. SO Sheldon's suggestion was to simply replace the Preamp, which was the perfect and simple solution. It was pretty simple to do, too.

Nordstrand's stock pu's fit perfectly in the older style Dingwalls. The Big Singles sound fantastic. I would like to try the Big Splits too.

SJ4 necks have changed a fair amount over the years. Early necks had narrower nuts. The carve evolved to a rounder shape. As we got feedback we adjusted things. There is no data on when the changes were made as they were done on the fly.

This might be as close as you can get with a "normal" combustion, I guess. Props to @Bocete for his great playing

Pleased you posted this, I too was getting put off by the slap/tap/pick demos and wondering if I was ordering the right bass for me. While I appreciate other styles, they were no help to this old fingerpicker dude. Now I am excited again, I have a transparent white Combustion v4 with a swamp ash body ordered from Bass Gear Direct in Sydney, it is due in September/October although judging by comments on the Dingwall forum there could be some delays in delivery.
Can't wait, bring it on....
