The large slots started at roughly serial number 640. It is interesting that V3 has very little info available. Possible it never existed or simply was a V3 bacause of some slight running change, like teh TR slot?

I will sat that my current NG-2 certainly has a neck profile that I like so perhaps searching for an older model isn't my best option. Except for color I love it in every way.

You're correct, good point. My 1st gen Combustion's truss rod is accessed from the headstock. It's not too easy to access the rod, but it's not like I have to tweak it often.

And yeah, it's hard for me to say it, but there's little to no reason to get a pre-V4. Unless you find a really, really good used deal, or must have a chunkier neck.

With that said, if someone wants to swap necks with a 1st gen... :D

Well I'm not in the club yet, but a just finalized my quote for my AB1:

Alder body
FD3-4L pups, standard bridge n neck positions
Glockenklang 3 band pre
Black gloss finish
Wenge neck, wenge fretboard
No inlays, side dots only
Kalium strings A standard tuning

Only thing I asked different was a inner neck carve. Not quite slim flat C, but between that and the medium thin C

Now the saving begins

Worked out a deal and have this coming my way! After my first experience with Dingwall in an unassuming super P back in march, and having finally had the chance to own a Fodera (and subsequently selling it cause all I wanted to play was my SPJ5!), I'm excited to be making the leap into the full-scale, full-range Dingwall world! Although I can't imagine it supplanting my Super series basses because they are near perfect basses, this will be an awesome foray into 37" B-C!

HA..no kiddin!! I was about to post my AB1 flamed sexy maple top today...but I can wait. My brain isn't smart enough for 5'ers. lol

Does anyone know if the shop still offers the version #1 of the 'custom' Dingwall knobs? I hate to pester the shop over little stuff like that. The Voodoo-Prima has the 'current' ones which are a bit larger (wider) and also have an 'indent' for the marker.

My Voodoo-Zebra from 05/08 has the slightly older ones that aren't quite as wide but have a round 'outtie' instead of the indent on the top. I find them easier to see where I have stuff set.

Hey y'all I had someone on FB contact me to garner some info as they get ready to sell a 2000-ish Voodoo Prima 5. If anyone is looking and interested in such a bass (natural finish, quilted maple front/back, slanted pickups). Let me know and I'll hand off the guys info or put you in touch by way of FB. I'm not involved in the sale in any way, but happy to help interested parties.

Looks like a pretty stock blackburst Voodoo Zebra. Ash body, 5pc maple neck, etc. It has the Barts that they used to wind for Sheldon and their three band preamp. I wouldn't expect that there's many surprises to it in comparison to other Dingwalls. What questions do you have about it?

At one point the listing mentioned something about it possibly being a Prima Voodoo, so I was curious about that...but it looks like they took that part out.

I guess I'm mainly curious about whether or not that's a fair price and how it holds up to the newer stuff as far as construction and electronics.

Primas of that era should be walnut bodied with maple top and backs, I believe. The Zebra has no additional top but is ash bodied.

In terms of electronics, the Bart thing is definitely different from the Dingwall made electronics. Some love them, some hate them. The neck is probably a bit thicker than the current Z's, but closer to an AB. I don't know when Sheldon started to do some of the more complex neck geometry...the current Z's have a think neck with asymmetrical neck profile and compound profile (changes as it goes up the neck). It also has a compound angle for the headstock and a compound fretboard radius. The Voodoo I just picked up is earlier and the neck is a bit thicker, but it still flattens out a bit towards the body, and doesn't have the asymmetrical carve to the profile.

I think the price of $2K is probably pretty decent. Although you can always try to haggle a bit.

I don't know what the asking price is, but I can say that fit and finish, playability, quality of construction etc holds up extremely well to the newer basses. As far as electronics goes, Sheldon has evolved his pickups over the years, and they are really killer. The Barts sound more like Barts, darker and less open, but that tone has its good points. I really like the way my Voodoo Prima with Bart electronics sits in the mix in virtually any genre. BUT, that is a matter of personal taste for sure.

But, depending on the price, you could always update the electronics to get more of a current tone and still have a killer bass for a great price. I have a Z2 4 string more of that vintage and with those exact electronics, and the fit and finish is awesome. The thing sets up so low its crazy!

I have a question about the year/serial number. I am planning on listing my AB1 soon, as its the only 5 string I own, and frankly, I am not anywhere near talented enough to figure out 5 string basses. LOL...anyway, before I post it in the classifieds, how do I know the year of it (I cant quite remember what it was)...I hope this isn't a dumb question..i did try to google it before I posted (just incase) :) I see 4 digits on the back of the headstock but unless it was made in 1934 or 1937, (LOL) then i'm stumped. I just don't want to mis-lead anyone on the year of it. Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure the numbers are fairly random, and you would need to get the shop to look it up.

I'd be very surprised if your AB number started with 1? I also don't believe the numbers are random. I think they're consecutive on the production schedule although maybe not on the release time. My 2008 was in the 4000 range, my 2005 was in the 3000 range.
