Markham. They had the Sklar behind the counter but two Combustion V4's in the regular section. An alder in Black Metallic with a Rosewood board (which looked stunning! I really like the Black Metallic... I think the NG-2 is now coming in this colour too, but I'm not too sure), and a Swamp Ash in the natural finish. It was two weeks ago now though. I'd be shocked if they were still there.
I'm actually kind of glad I didn't get it because I did some research afterwards and decided I'd prefer the NG-2 over the standard Combustion, but I could have moved the pickups and got a new pickguard... I wouldn't have gotten the Darkglass pre, but at least I wouldn't have to wait 6-8 months for it once I do save up for it.
Huh, yeah I didn't notice any DWs in their regular area...I was there on Sunday. Maybe I missed them. Love that ABZ though.... I think it was $2600.....I think it was passive too. Maybe an NG2 will pop up in the classifieds soon.... 
That would be nice... But I try to stay away from the Classifieds. I'm not too confident in buying a used bass without being able to see it in person first, and seeing a sweet deal in the classifieds, to me, is the equivalent of walking into an L&M, seeing a Dingwall that you can't afford at the moment, and walking out unable to buy it.Huh, yeah I didn't notice any DWs in their regular area...I was there on Sunday. The .125T was definitely the right call in that set model. The .130T PFGWFlat prototype took over the rest of the set. It didn't sound balanced tonally. Too much low end compared to the rest of the strings.
They do sound best when broken in for a few weeks.

I just got in my first one, never played one in my life. Hooked, line and sinker. And before this came in you couldn't have told me I liked yellow.
You took a much larger 'leap of faith' than most by deciding to carry Dingwalls without experiencing even one in person! Once you get that first one in hand, you know you're not risking anything when you order the next one (and the next, and so on).

Yes, it certainly was. But after speaking with Sheldon for two different almost one hour conversations, and reading the wonderful reviews, as well as you sharing your experiences (thanks), I was convinced these were the right choice. After comparing these basses to ones I have that cost twice as much, it is quite obvious the detail, love, and energy that were put into them. And the Combustion I received (with maple neck) is every bit the same quality as the NG2 with the main difference being the pre.You took a much larger 'leap of faith' than most by deciding to carry Dingwalls without experiencing even one in person! Once you get that first one in hand, you know you're not risking anything when you order the next one (and the next, and so on).

Well, I took some time this weekend to give my most recent Combustion a little love. First thing was to install a set of USA Hipshot Ultralights along with a bass extender detuner. I expected them to be an easy drop in install but, as I have found with other basses, not so much. It took considerable and very careful clearing and expanding the peg holes enough for the bushing to easily fit. The paint is pretty thin and VERY brittle so it was a lot of breath holding that no chipping happened. It turned out well.
The second little thing was adding some aluminum standoffs to the string retainer. I've done this on all my Laklands with great results. Cleans up that area cosmetically, adds strength and makes changing strings a breeze.
Third was a fretboard cleaning, fret polish and a fresh set of Dingwall nickels. Followed by a nice setup with some very positive truss rod and bridge adjustments. The playability is wonderful now.
The last project was to install an East U-Retro Deluxe pre amp. It's probably the perfect 4 hole upgrade. I love East pre's anyway so getting it into the Combustion was a real plus. Vol, blend, bass, treble, mid with sweep, full bypass and passive tone. And I even have a Producer Switch now as the toggle is simply a hole filler.
It's now a bass I think I can be happy with as my #1 for a long time!

Hey, in a mixup of ordering with BSO I ended up with 6 string set of Dingwall long scale nickels while I had a 5 string set OTW from Dingwall directly. I won't need a set for a while so before I take these to the classifieds I thought I'd offer them here. Brand new and unopened.

Hmm, I've got an unopened package from BSO at home that's supposed to contain 6 string longscale nickels. I wonder if it's actually your 5 string set. I'll open it tonight.

Ah, the Producer Switch! That was inspired by incompetent producers ignorant of music terminology, who would make nebulous statements like, “Can you make it shimmer?” Or, “Can you make it more mauve-y?” I had done a TV session where Tommy Tedesco—out of sight of the producer, except for his head—kept bending over and picking up the same acoustic guitar when asked to try mandolin and other stringed instruments. He would simply play in a different position on the neck, and it worked! So I immediately went home and drilled a hole in my bass and put in a dummy Switchcraft switch. Then when I would get one of these tenuous requests, I would make sure the producer could see me hit the switch, and I’d just play higher up on the neck or pluck closer to the bridge, and they’d say, “Perfect!” On my Warwick Star Basses there was an extra hole from a change in the electronics, so I had them put a Producer Switch on them."
I think they sent me a six string set because they were out of stock on teh five string sets when I ordered. I only got the OOS e-mail and no communication of what was going on so I ordered from Dingwall directly.

Neat! Can you give us a comparison of that the East pre with the standard pre? Or a Darkglass as in NS2?
Sure. The Darkglass in NG2 was strong, and had an easy 'edge' if that makes sense. I found it was easier to drive into aome level of distortion or overdrive. It does clean well but if I played at all aggressively teh clean went away. I like clean. The stock EMG is 'nice' . Great tone, very clean and rather white-breadish, but not in a bad way. Just plain. And, I could probably be very happy with it. For many years the EMG two band was my favorite and go-to pre amp, in Jazz basses to Spectors. In fact I had planned on adding the 4 position selector switch to that setup. But, as I mulled all my options I had to do a repair on my U-Retro anyway already had it out of the bass it was in, which saw less and less playing time. So it was a perfect opportunity to plug it into the Combustion. The East Preamps are a high quality, and best described as 'muscular. Clean but strong and very modern but musical. They have a solid output. Tonally they are wonderfully flexible with everythning onboard at your fingertips. I have had them in every Lakland DJ5 ive owned and wouldn't have anything else. I can't wait to hear this one live now.
Well, I called to cancel the order and I think it was their way of keeping the sale. They offered me the 6 string set but told me the 5 string sets were due in any day. I said I'd wait for the 5 string sets.
But I am thinki they went ahead and sent the 6. No big deal.
