I am not sure if they do refinishing, actually. Both are good questions. I would say that, in my mind, to answer the second question is highly variable to give a blanket answer :). Are we talking about refinishing a Combustion, or an Canadian one?
A 2001 z2... forgive me, I've been stuck out of town on business for too long and my mind starts to wander with crazy ideas. It currently has a perfectly good finish but the matte white they have makes me tingle on the inside

This one?

The FD3's and TC preamp sound great together, as long as you like a very modern tone; the TC has a similar EQ curve to the B7K when set clean, meaning a wide boost around 100, a sharp cut around 350 and narrower boost around 3k.

My AB is also ash/wenge, so it's already a very present sounding instrument, and with the TC engaged things start to sound very aggressive very quickly; with steel strings it's especially easy to get harshly bright on top if you aren't careful.

That being said, the way the bass sits is like nothing I've ever heard before: bottomless depth with tons of clarity, so much so that it's actually forced me to clean up my technique.
Thanks for your observations on the FD3's and Tone Capsule in your ash/wenge AB. Would the new FDV pickups with nickel strings provide a little warmer tone with less chance of getting harsh bright on top? I have an ash/wenge Clement 5-string with Nordy Bigman pickups and pre and really like that wood combination. I'm considering an ash/wenge Super J 3X build with FDV's and am unsure whether to go with the Darkglass or Glock pre. I like the slam and mid shaping the Darkglass offers but it doesn't have a passive tone control (rolling off upper mids at 2.8k isn't quite the same). The Glock is supposed to be pretty transparent, splendid with the ash/wenge 3X, and has that passive tone control. For a punchy, solid, well-defined finger style tone that leans closer to traditional than metal or ultra modern which do you think would get the nod?

In my opinion having quite a bit of experience with the Tone Capsule and a lil bit of experience with the Glock pre, I think that you will find the Glock pre to more pristine than TC. There is not a control for highs with the TC as with the Glock

I agree with 99Z3.
Don't have one here at the moment to compare but I did research as much as I could. I have seen several applications of the Darkglass pre, most players who get one report there is a certain pleasing aggressiveness that works well in just a lot of different basses and situations. There are a lot of fans, including me. I have ordered the Darkglass in a lot of basses. I have't yet had a chance to listen to the Glock but everything I have researched suggests a more extended range "hi fi" type sound. I personally think in the type bass you are ordering combined with what it appears to me you are saying, that you would actually probably like either but that the Glock may give a bit more of what it appears you are looking for. I ordered the Glock in a ABII.

Didn't have a Dingwall; used little "shorty" traveling guitars and basses with battery powered amps and PA.
I did a small gig tonight and played originals, performing for the 2nd time in years. We did the originals and then when they wanted more we had to just bring off-the-wall material. It was a blast, I did lead vocals and bass, which is difficult for me to do on some material and I never try to sing lead much but only in a pinch. We actually received 3 encores. I have only once played with the guitarist and no time to practice; just do it was only option, and I was a bit surprised we pulled it off as well as we did. Fun.

This struggle is the reason why I went with the Glock for my build (ABI, ash/wenge)
My logic was that I could always make a clean tone dirtier, and I already own a Darkglass VMT and B7K. Can't really make a dirty tone clean as easily :)

So...... I think the Nolly is going to be going back......
It's an awesome rig but I had a pretty crazy weekend around here with a few major changes to the family.
The f bass shipped off to its new home on Saturday and then for Father's Day this came together.

My bongo 6 will be sorely missed but I could Not pass up on this opportunity. I was eyeing this thing up since August of last year.
Lol Friday I had no intent of owning a Z3 for quite a few years down the road just cause of the shear cost compounded with my other purchases. But sometimes a plan just comes together.
I guess I need to take some new family photos. ;)

I sure do love me a Dingwall!!!!

Are there any pickups that are single coil available for a Dingwall?

I'm coming from a single coil loaded J bass and basically anything else that I play is too dark sounding and not open enough.

If love to get a set of Nordstrand Big Singles, but I'm curious if there is anything readily available before I go down the custom route.

Depending which Dingwall, you may not need custom Big Singles. The Combustion/ABZ uses EMG shapes and allegedly the 19 mm standard spacing Big Singles line up well with the Dingwall 18 mm spacing when rotated. The only thing is I believe you'd want the "left hand" pole orientation (angled the other way) to best capture the strings on a right handed Dingwall.

It's an ABZ 5.

Out of curiosity, do you know if EMG 40s fit? I've got a 40P and a 40J just waiting to get used. I love a good PJ too.

I'm contemplating getting a P Tone for it but I'd like to know my options.
