Dingwall Owners Club

OK a few subjective/nonstandard questions I can't really ask Dingwall sales:

1.) How do the FD-3 pickups compare with something like Delano SBC HE pickups?

2.) Has anyone tried installing their own pickup blend knob?

3.) Has anyone tried ordering with just the pickup rout, control routs, and control cavity rout and doing their own electronics?

4.) Has anyone tried installing piezo pickups in the bridge saddles?

Sheldon estimated 9 months on my SJ5 last October, but it turned out to be only 8 months.

@groovaholic has, and I know he prefers the blend knob over the 4 way switch. For me, I could do away with all parallel pick up wiring, and just do different variations of series wiring.

1) I dunno about the Delanos, but the FD-3's are very bright and "honest" sounding pickups to me. I'm particularly fond of the P-Tone.
2) Yes, many times. My best results have been with M/N taper pots, and I like 500k to keep things bright.
3) No, but I've routed additional pickup holes in my Dingwall (that was just as scary as it sounds) and installed an FD-3...
4) Now you're talking crazy...

Basically, the electronics on Dingwall basses are GREAT and represent an important part of the sonic recipe.
With that said, although they don't need modification, the underlying tone is so pure that they are a great foundation for more elaborate electronic schemes.

I turned my Z2 4-string into a Z3 4-string and have been VERY happy with the results!

Thanks, yah, parallel wiring doesn't do much for me. I would prefer switching between series and split coil and it would be nice to be able to blend the pickups.

Thanks. I replaced the crappy pickups and electronics in my six-string Fender Jazz with Delano SBC/HEs and the Glockenklang preamp. I like the Delano's quite a bit, but wouldn't be opposed to trying something new. The Glockenklang pre is extremely transparent, I agree with that description but I've been liking the John East preamps a little more in my other basses. A bit more interventionist perhaps, but it seems like I can do more with them. Nonetheless, if I pull the trigger on the ABII, I'll probably go stock setup so that it retains its resell value, in case I die prematurely and my kids want to buy a coffin for me. I actually thought the blend knob and piezo pickups were the more reasonable of the four ideas I had though. With the chambered body and f-holes, I bet I could get a pretty good semi-acoustic sound with some Graph Tech Ghost saddles installed. I know a luthier who could probably figure out a way to do it. Who knows, if I did that, I might forget about my other basses . . .
