Does anybody know if US dealers carry pickups, or is that a direct from the shop only thing? Starting to consider the P tone pickup...

I got mine from the shop, and picked up a shirt and some other odds and end as long as I was paying the Canadian shipping.

I've bought lots of bass gear over the year. (Haven't we all!). The P tones rate at the top of my "money well spent" list. I put one in an AB-1, and a split P style in a Super J. If they had a Ptone for the six string, I'd have been all over that too.

Right up there with the Dingwalls they went into. And my fEarful builds.

Matt, I was looking for feedback and the opinions of someone that has done that to their AB1 and how they liked it.. all of my Spector basses have one in them, but they are all P/J configuration.. I guess I am wanting to know more about how the pups interact with the Tone Capsule pre!

I think he was looking for a wiring diagram.

I am not sure which version of the pickups you have. That may be a first step; manufacture date, and if there is something different. If they are similar to current version there is no reason the outcome wouldn't be similar to what you are used to with the Darkglass pre; more aggressive tone.
I spent at least an hour speaking with Sheldon on the differences of his basses and with the Glockenklang, the Darkglass, etc. My conclusion was to order the ABZ with the Darkglass but the ABII with the Glockenklang as I felt a less aggressive and more hi-fi tone may be nice with the ABII.

I believe someone posted that at the pre neutral position the active and the passive sound was the same, but I can't remember which pre he had.
Did you have a chance to play the NG2 with the Darkglass? Even allowing for tonal differences and pickup placement of your bass and the NG2 I expect that would be a good predictor of what to expect.

Just like I was distracted and never got to play your Dingwall! And they were only a few feet away... And Spiritbass's fine Dingwalls...same thing...; you know, work has a way of getting in the way of fun!

The neutral preamp is the Glock, there is no discernible difference in tone or output when set flat...the Tone Cpsule on the other hand adds both a slight boost and some very noticeable color in the flat position.

The FD3's and TC preamp sound great together, as long as you like a very modern tone; the TC has a similar EQ curve to the B7K when set clean, meaning a wide boost around 100, a sharp cut around 350 and narrower boost around 3k.

My AB is also ash/wenge, so it's already a very present sounding instrument, and with the TC engaged things start to sound very aggressive very quickly; with steel strings it's especially easy to get harshly bright on top if you aren't careful.

That being said, the way the bass sits is like nothing I've ever heard before: bottomless depth with tons of clarity, so much so that it's actually forced me to clean up my technique.

I currently have the Tone Capsule preamp in an ABHS with a Bubinga body & full wenge neck that makes for a rather bright sounding bass compared to my alder AB1.
At shows I'd instinctively reach out to dial down the Hi-Mid knob & boost some bass. The EQ works really well with the FD3s! You get warm sounding bass that remains defined for faster passages, 500hz mids that you can boost for solos to really cut through the band or a Hi-Mid frequency that can push out some crunch & grind if you're using a pick. I personally prefer a warm round tone & it works for that quite well. My only gripe is that it doesn't have a passive treble bleed like the Glock preamps. But I've got that covered via pedalboard. Hope this helps.

Are the alnico pups a drop-in replacement for the FD3'S? Or was some routing required? And how would you describe the alnico as compared to the FD3'S?

Picked up an ABZ in a trade. I like the feel, lack of string tree, and reach reducing pin compared to my V4 Combustion. But I'm not loving the FD3a pickups, especially the parallel wired neck. Think about getting a P-tone to put in the neck, but then I wonder if a Mach II in the bridge position would make a better pair. At that point, it's tempting to add a preamp too, at which point it might make more sense to just upgrade to a higher model... It's a dangerously slippery slope!

That's definitely an option! I think it makes sense to eliminate controls that you won't use.
But (for me) I'd think twice about giving up the ability to solo the neck pickup; if you get a P-Tone, you're going to want access to that!

In my case (on my Z2) I omitted the volume knob, but kept a blend.

Whichever fits the bass to your needs the best...

Shells are identical to the FD3's.

The alnico has more grind and warmth in the mids and not as much extension on the top and bottom.

I'll be able to describe the differences better once I actually play both in the same bass
