Cool. It's nice to see the Payson FNS-Reduced Cores in Australia.
I just received this beauty today. I traded in My NYC Sadowsky for it which has been my main bass for a few years. Quite a different beast....
I'll post more shots when I get a chance, too busy working and playing it!

And, the Eagle (SJ5XXX) has landed
I will head down to pick it up in a few hours and will even get a chance to play it a bit before I saddle up the Harley and ride 400 miles (via West Yellowstone) tomorrow for our Montana gig on Saturday. If all goes well I'll debut it there.
Awesome mate. I only just got my first Dingwall and am thinking of how cool a 5 string PJ would be lol!
Do you carry your bass on the bike with you? Thats hard core if you do!!

I will have some soon but briefly. Perhaps a day to check them out and make sure they play OK then send them out. So far I have only played a 5-string Dingwall.
No, after spending an hour with the SJ5XXX, I took it to a bandmate who is hauling the gear trailer to Montana, I have hauled a bass to practice on the Harley thougj, but like any good Talkbasser I have enough basses to leave at either practice facility.
A couple of brief thoughts on the SJ5XXX, first, sheer perfection, secondly, an ungodly amount of tones in there, and third, I instantly became a better bassist after I strapped it on. I've waited all my life to own an instrument of this quality. Well done Dingwall!!!!!

Ah, ok that makes sense then. ive never carried my bass on one of my bikes, but they have all been sports bikes and it woudl have been pretty hard to ride like that!
And great news on the SJ bass, I hope it works out well for you, send though some gig pics when you get them!
Here's a couple of "bedroom" shots of my new AB2. I've re-twigged my first setup by raising the action and it's improved the playing 100% - I had it too low to startwith and was gettign a little but too much choke on the notes. Now, it plays like a dream. I am still yet to tweak the pickups but so far it's a mighty tone and sounds fantastic.

I am hoping the Dingwall owners can help me out with a couple of questions. I am looking at a Dingwall as my next bass; the main attraction being the fanned fret system since I have owned a fanned fret guitar and I loved it. I am trying to understand what the basic differences are between the Afterburner 1, 1.5, 2 and 3; do these numbers represent the chronology of a series of basses that have been modified over time or do they represent different levels of wood/finish/electronics? I was also wondering if the NG2 might work for me since it is a lot less expensive and has the fanned fret system. I understand that some parts are made in China and there are no custom options but I am fine with a non-custom provided the quality is there. Thanks so much!

Originally, ABI is alder body and passive.
ABII is semi-hollow and active/passive.
AB1.5 was simply an ABI with an active preamp. Don't know about an ABIII, although there is now a model that is solid body.
These distinctions are blurred a bit now because Sheldon has advanced his manufacturing to the point that so many options are available. So the AB1.5 is really obsolete, as preamps are available on ABI's as an option.
I can't speak to the specs on the Combustions and Nolly's as I've never played one. But it says on that comparison chart above that they are made in China from North American components.

As far as I can make out the only difference between the two (as they are optioned up) is the Swamp Ash vs Alder body. I wondered if there is someone who has compared the two and tell me what tonal difference I might expect; I am guessing that alder is more traditional while swamp ash (provided it is light) is more open and less focused (if that makes any sense!)

I think that's pretty much the difference, as well as maybe the available options.
The ABZ was ash body, satin finish, passive and maple neck and board.
The ABI was alder, gloss finish, maple board with wenge fingerboard and passive.
Now they are both available with preamps, fancy tops and wenge necks. The available options have blurred their distinction. But I think swamp ash vs alder and satin vs gloss finish may well remain as distinctions. But even those may be blurred now!!

I do think the woods differential gets blurred with all the tonal adjustments available with the pres, pickups and strings.
The SJ5XXX continues to exceed my high expectations, and performed flawlessly at the gig. Twice people came up on stage during a break and asked to see it and they wanted to touch the paint, I also had friends of the singer come up after sound check and before we started wanting to see it and talk about it. I almost felt overshadowed until I started playing, and then again the SJ5XXX delivered, this time sonically. The tone I went with was neck PUP solo'd, all 3 series/parallel switches on, and bass tone 90% on, and never changed it other than the Phat Phuk on for half a set. The tone was so present, thick and powerful I just couldn't change. I did notice some tonal variation based upon my plucking location and force. I really think I could be happy with a 2 PUP SJ5 (although the middle/bridge tone is cool too), but then I only had 1 hour on this bass before I gigged it. As for pictures, I have a few bad ones I can post tomorrow and will get with the band to see what they have. Oh, and I'm also glad I didn't go with Ptone PUPs, for me, I wouldn't change a thing.
My biggest problem? I don't want to play anything else, my ABI may have to go for another SJ5, which kind of saddens me, but the SJ just fits my body perfectly, better than the ABI or the SP5 I had.

So I received a Dingwall Levy's gig bag with my AB2 and while I am very impressed with the bags well thought out pockets, nooks and crannies, the build etc . I am finding it is next to useless when I have it on my back... it sticks up so far above my head I have to almost crawl though doors to get through and it wants to fall away from my back, even with the shoulder straps done up real tight. I've been using the mono single and double bags for years now and have swapped my Dingwall into one of those and put the Levy bag away. It's a pity as I really want to love the bag but it's just unusable on my back.

Re the Ptone pickup, do you have one in your AB1? My AB2 did not come with one but I'm thinking of getting one from Sheldon to try.
