The eq controls on the Tone Capsule are active only. So in passive they are disconnected from the circuit along with the pre-amp. This is pretty much how all onboard pre-amps are configured. Glock and our old hybrid treble being the exception. Some builders add an additional passive tone control however now you've got an extra knob and have to keep track of two treble controls.

While this description does match the vast majority of onboard pres, I was pleasantly surprised by the Harley Benton B-550

Which gives you active bass and treble controls when the pre is on, AND passive bass and treble controls (SAME knobs) when you turn the pre off, and yes, they even work in passive mode if your battery is dead.

Oh that's funny. I had to look really close to see if you snagged a picture of our band, because that was the exact setup we had for a 4th of July private party! The house looked a lot like that one and so did the band! Hilarious

It's been a great few weeks... much, much music happening. Right now, both bands are in a bit of a breather / lull, which is extremely welcome. I haven't had a good chance to just sit down and practice at home without prepping for a gig or recording. Whew.

With that said, it did pass the time nicely... now I'm back to staring at the clock, waiting on my AB1 6 string. Still probably about 5 months out... oi.

Now that I have some time, I may also swap the electronics between the two AB1s I have. We'll see if I actually get enough time to really think about that and do it, but part of me definitely wants to. Phi deserves to be played more (It gets played about 20% of the time right now, being F# and all), but I like how it looks and it feels ever so slightly different/better. So I may swap the two.

It's official - it's been too long since my SJ5 has been strung with steel Dingwall strings. The DR LoRider and Dunlop SS rounds that I've been using are fine, but when it comes to the B and E strings, the Dingwalls can't be beat. The custom tapers probably have a lot to do with the noticeably improved focus/clarity compared to the DR's and Dunlops. I played it live this morning - beautiful and beastly tones! :cool: Thanks to Jason @ BSO, I'm back on the Dingwall string wagon for the SJ5...

I've been using the mono single and double bags for years now and have swapped my Dingwall into one of those and put the Levy bag away. It's a pity as I really want to love the bag but it's just unusable on my back.

I like the older levys bag better that I have. It came with the hanging hook and even though it's not built as well the ergonomics made more sense.

I'm 5'6'' and have the same problem. Otherwise the bag is great.

My first gig with my AB2 on the weekend and I couldn't have been happier. It took about two songs to adjust to frets and scale length (I had done a weeks worth of wood shedding with the bass but you never know until you play it live) but after that I was free to revel in the glorious punch and clarity that is the B string - it's an absolute beast. In fact, I had stayed away from the B on my Sadowsky on certain notes as I knew it would not sound the best but on the AB2, I was using it as much as possible.. and the whole clarity of every note on the bass is amazing and everything I had read about it.

The drummer lent over during our 5th or 6th song and said "thats one of if not the best basses I have ever hear or played with live!".... so mission accomplished!

Now I just need to find the best sound on various positions on the pickups etc. and I'm set. The knobs did not prove to be as much of an issue as I thought they would be, it was mainly the pickup selector I had the problem with as I was fiddling with it all night. Both pups in series was my preferred sound in this particular room.

The band leader and trumpet player on the night are also bass players and both had a play of the bass at sound check and it only took a minute or so to get used to the frets down low and they were pretty amazed. The BL has a really nice collection of basses including a Fodera 4 string and Roscoe 5 sting and said this was as good as the Fodera for slap and in reality is a more versatile bass for covers etc. Which just goes to show that Sheldon's stuff is as world class as we say it is. I'm not sure if I've converted ether of them over to the dark side yet, but they were both duly impressed!

I have 8 gigs coming up in the next 4 weeks so the bass will get the lions share of those as the main bass...

Hello Dingwall Owners Club - I need some advice from you experienced Dingwall owners.

I bought a 1998 Voodo Prima 5 a few months ago. It has a black walnut body with book matched quilted maple front and back, maple neck and a pau ferro board. I love the thin neck, very fast and comfortable. A beautiful looking, sounding and playing bass. I replaced the Bartolini pickups and pre with FD3s and a Glock 3 band pre just to bring it up to today's specs - sounds even better!

Reading this thread, you guys have given me some serious Z GAS (or DAS ). I'm wondering given the similar neck profile and electronics would there be much difference between a Z and my Voodo Prima? Enough to justify the cost? (I know very subjective but your opinions count and will help me decide)
