I'm not really into old school flats, I like chromes and T.I but 5 string sets are expensive and I'm also aware paysons started making a set. Any comparison between the three for dingwalls? I have a feeling T.I's would be my best bet for a modern flat sound, but I have no idea about the Paysons

I tried La Bella flats on my ABZ6. Well made, great feeling strings. ADGC were fantastic, E was a little lacking, but the B didn't have enough presence for me. I need the ABZ to be as flexible as possible, so I'd rather have all the treble I can available, with the option to take it away when needed.

I went back to Dingwall nickels on that, but recently swapped the worn out Dunlop Super Bright nickels on my Super P5 for an old set of TI flats for the E-G and a barely played B. This is a nice balance thus far on the SP5. The B speaks very clearly and will continue to do so as it wears in over time. The E-G thump but still cut and won't change tone until they break since I've had them on various basses for about 6 years now.

I currently dig the modern/ old-school dichotomy of the two basses.

I do, however, think a Super J4 is somewhere in my distant future, and probably an AB series fretless. That'd be a versatile collection.

Well, it turns out to be a good thing that I am 'off duty' at church for three weeks. I placed an order for fresh four and five-string sets of Dingwall steels which are temporarily unavailable due to some problem with the E strings. I am assuming that this was discovered at the Dingwall shop while stringing new basses. I had been using DR and Dunlop steel rounds until lately when Bass Strings Online began carrying the Dingwall strings. I had forgotten just how good they are. Or something got 'tweaked' since I had last used them (this is entirely possible!). I don't believe they would fit on a long-scale Dingwall, but I am still enjoying the Dunlop flats on my SP4. :cool:

With the sale of my ABI5 (that one's gonna sting a while), I'm in the market for an SJ5 or SPJ5 if anyone is considering selling one. I'm looking to hold the cost at $3,000. Will also consider a lightweight SP5, but I really like having the 2 PUP configuration.

PM any offers.

Sometimes our body doesn't give us much of a choice. It's the second alert this year so I have to take it seriously and really heal.

The fun part is I've still played a couple gigs, fretting with the thumb. That's when you're happy to know the songs inside out, especially having to sing and trigger samples.
