I like Nickel slightly larger gauge strings on my Dingwall's. :bassist: The Fanned Nickels are slightly less hi fi with an emphasis on the low mids. They still cut nicely with the tone wide open. Matter of fact I'm using my treble roll off less.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense for Nickels to be that way. Seems that way to me on any bass I use Nickels on.

I played my new (to me) ABZ 4-stringer on my gig this weekend. Just got it Thursday and put about 7 hours on the thing before Friday's night gig! The clarity of that long scale "E" is very addicting to say the least!

I had never touched a Dingwall before this. First impressions would be of a very high quality build. The neck is right there with my Sadowsky, (though the Dingwall has slightly wider nut/feel) but just really an excellent neck!

I am used to small necks...I have only been playing Jazz width necks for awhile now, and my '60 is tiny. After the first set Friday, my hand was bugging me a bit with the ABZ and I considered running home to grab a different bass, since I still had 11 hours of gigs to go through Sat. night.

So Chas wants a little chunkier neck, I was wanting a little narrower! Granted I have small hands.

Anyway, I liked the sound soo much I thought I should just stick with it a few more sets, which I did, and my hand never bothered me again through the rest of the 11 hours. I ended up being very happy that I kept playing it! I guess just a little adjustment period.

I got many, many compliments on the tone!
I'm lucky enough to have a bunch of quality basses that make it to these gigs and I am always changing up what bass I bring. People there are used to hearing me play vintage and new Fenders, or Sadowsky's, ect. anyway, just some nice quality basses.

So when I'm say the Dingwall got lots of unsolicited compliments on it's tone, that is a very nice compliment indeed!

The series setting killed on my gig! I used all the settings but kept ending up on series.

I put a set of super long Chromes on it since I love the feel of flats. I think this must be the first bass that flats didn't kill the slap tone. Never had that before.

I had read that some people have had problems up high on the neck with the fanned frets, and I play a lot up there. The slanted frets were a non-issue for me.

Very nice bass! I highly recommend!

I guess now I need to get a photo and join the club...this bass pulled me in!

I get that not everyone has an appreciation for figured wood tops, but if you do, you have to concede this one to be pretty high up on the all-time ridiculous list. I like my bass and believe my top is pretty unique and quite interesting, but this one is just off the charts.

And, it's a great bass to boot! I know I am pretty new to the Dingwall world, but I am quickly discovering how special these basses are.

That is a dream top for me.

I'm thinking shipping has to be about $500-600 to the States.

If it were a four string, I think I would be in trouble!

EDIT: Shipping would be much less if you shipped the neck separate from the body.

That is my SJ4 through a TC Electronic rig (RH450/RS212/RS410/RS210). The audio is from the camcorder's tiny mic (Kodak Zi8), but other than compressing a good bit, it's a fairly accurate recording, tone-wise. As you can see, that SJ4 is far from "hi-fi" (though I can certainly "pretty it up a bit" with the pickup selection and EQ).

And that Dingwall makes Chris Squire's sound on Roundabout sound weak and whimpy!

Incredible basses....can hardly wait for mine, and to see how it fits in jazz and funk....

I'm considering a new Z3 and I'd like your input on fretboard wood choices. I've had the chance to sample (i.e. fall in love with) a few Dingwalls down at Jive Sound here in the D.C. area but they have all had Wenge fretboards. Over the years, I've owned basses with just about every type of fretboard wood or material. However, one wood that I haven't had the opportunity to sample or hear is Ziricote. This is, of course, one of the optional fretboards on the Dingwall Z series. Ziricote always looks fantastic but I'm most interested in its tone.

So, how does Ziricote compare to Wenge, Macassar Ebony or other well know fretboard woods?

Isn't Bowlus' Z a Ziricote boarded one? I have maple on my Z, but I'm one who thinks that FB wood is an extremely minor factor in tone.

I agree. I can not imagine that there would be differences beyond the minor nuance. FB woods is discussed a great deal yet I have owned dozens of basses and still have no generalizations about how maple verses rosewood verses whatever sounds. I think the combination of the body and the PU-preamp makes for the one character. Any nuance of the fb, IMO, can be tweaked in or out with EQ.

Sometimes those type of gigs are the most memorable, way to go! Dummy cabs are awesome!!
A Dingwall is truly a "man(or woman) of all seasons" to say the least. I play plenty of Soul, Funk and R&B, it's great for Blues of course too, I just turn the tweeter off and hit it hard.

The guitar(s) are a bit over-powering because of the "cam-corder" mic thing as well.

Yeah, I am a slacker, I know... :atoz:

At any rate, I have only tried two basses with zirocote boards, my Z3 and my new Tom Clement fretless. My opinion so far is that it seems to have the overall clarity of mac ebony, but without the "ping" and it is a little warmer. It has a more even response than wenge, and is not as punchy as wenge.

Again, these are just my initial thoughts. I reserve the right to change them over time. :D

I do know that zirocote sure is pretty, though! :cool:
