So...These are my beautiful Z x3 and SJ5 x3 exotics. The SJ5 has FD3 pickups and a glock pre. The Z also has FD3 pickups but I switched out the glock pre for Dark Glass (which I absolutely love). The Z is like a super aggressive Jazz with the bridge and neck pickups selected (parallel), and a Music Man Stingray on steroids with the bridge and middle pickup selected. I'm playing in a couple of funk bands right now, lots of slapping, so the Z is my go-to at the moment.

I'd like to make my SJ5 more of a "vintage"- tone bass, with a more traditional jazz (bridge an neck pickups) and precision (neck pickup soloed) option. So my idea with the SJ5 is to replace the neck pickup with a P-tone, and the bridge and middle FD3's with FDVs.
Anyone care to comment on this plan?

I can't criticize your SJ5 plan I certainly like the FDV at the bridge of my SPJ5. As far as my SJ5XXX, I'm going to put Ptones at the middle and bridge and leave the neck PUP stock. I'll post my thoughts after I do it and play it with the band. BTW, my SJ5XXX is N solo'd, N&M series, M&B parallel, M solo'd.

Thanks a lot funk. My wife and I are having fun on this ride. I just finished strap number 4 tonight. I'll post some pics in my leatherworking thread.

I'm thinking I'm gonna try something a little different on my new build. The more I think about it I'll go P tone neck and a couple of SF2s. I love the SFs in my Z3 and figure I'll give the new ones a go. Not much of a vintage sound guy here but I am really curious to hear what yours and thumpers bass sounds like with the mods you guys are doing. Bottom line anything Dingwall puts out sounds killer which makes it so darn hard to choose sometimes.

I love the guy - but my wife??...mehhhh...she cries a bit when i say im going to visit him. ;)
Back to 3 Dingwalls again in my stable - i've had quite a few brands come and go over the last year or so. My "go to" brands seem to be Dingwall and Spectors....i seem to gravitate to those the most. Not a bad thing at all. :)

FDV x3 with DG pre is just killer in the basses I have received. Haven't tried the P-tone.

That is what I want to try (p tone + (2) fdv). Am hoping for a sweeter more rounded tone.

Who's had their Dingwall modded in the US?

I'm considering a bridge pickup routing, refinish, and new pickguard for my SP5. Who would you guys suggest for the work and how quickly can it be done? I'm moving overseas in two months, and I'd rather get the work all finished up before I go.

The pickup route and pickguard are simple and most shops should be able to do those in a timely fashion. I worked on mine with a luthier bud of mine here in WA, but he doesn't do mods for the general public.
Where things might/will likely go sideways is on a refinish. Most reputable shops I know are backed up for at least several weeks, if not months.

I had my Combustion modded. Neck routing expanded for 3x pick up layout, and a new pick guard cut. It took a while for my guy to get to the project, as he has about a 6 month backlog, but he completed it very quickly once he started. Great results on mine, and he was excited to work on a Dingwall.
