How long ago did you try them? DR changed to a new coating (called "K3") about 5 years ago...

Sheldon mentioned though that you can now only get mandolin frets on the Sklar. I think you used to be able to custom order a Z with them.

Another great interview. Love Sheldon's stories. I'm going through some of the same things he mentioned with design and running out of steam. Picking it back up later. Self doubt. Makes me feel normal.

On another note Dingwallians, I'm working on black strings for long scale Dingwall's, perfect drop in fit, tapered, punchy yet zingy.

Well, that's a timely post @Blues Cat, since there are about 5 posts above about DR's Black Beauties, which don't fit the long scale models. So they will be coated..yes?

Not the type of coating that can dull the string's tone, is the best way to phrase it.

Thank you! Yes lots of stuff available for Fanned Fret basses... I'm working on making some changes to the navigation of the site and will be adding a section explaining what exactly will work on fanned frett basses / dingwalls etc... Always happy to answer any questions!

In short, if the bass has a 37" scale b-string (dingwall NG2 / combustion etc) you need at least a 38.25" winding length... no longer than 40.25" The following manufacturers have strings that will appropriately fit:

DR Extra Long
Ernie Ball Extra Long
Fodera Extra Long
Ken Smith Extra Long
La Bella Custom Length (They made some for me Flats / Black Nylon / White Nylon)
Rotosound Extra Long
Sadowsky Extra Long
Thomastik-Infeld Extra Long

The most important string is the B / E string and B / E string position as they are the ones that need to be longest... The A / D / G strings can be standard Long Scale strings... The only time things can be "odd" is if the strings have silk on them or if they are Tape wounds... Example... The Long Scale La Bella Tape Wound 40" length strings actually start at 42"... So the nylon portion of the string will go around the tuner... Since the string is so short it doesn't necessarily cause a "problem" but the silks will not line up by the tuning posts as they do on some other strings... If the strings do not have silk on it the D G C strings are usually "scaleless" where the string is one winding thickness the entire length of the string and does not matter if it is a "short scale" or "extra long scale" string...

So in short, if you wanted to make a custom "fanned fret" string set or use a standard pre-packaged set out of any of the above manufacturers you can do so!

I could have sworn I ordered a set of DR Extra Long Black Beauties and the B started to taper between the nut and 1st fret... Let me see if I still have those when I get home and I can measure the winding length from the ball end. Maybe I ordered the wrong set.

I too ordered a set of DR Extra Long Black Beauties and can confirm the B does taper before reaching the nut. About 1/4 inch in my case.

Jason assured me these were the longest Black Beauties available.

I can confirm that the Sadowsky Extra Long work, and that the DR extra long do not. No experience with the others.
