Same here. And for that matter, I tried a balanced set of Circle K Nickel Steels on my AB3x and it was yet another interchangeable switchout that required no tweaking to the set up. Now that I think about it, I had a set of the Payson reduced core on the AB3x before that! Before that, it had a set of Dingwall nickels. I haven't had to tweak the set up even a tiny bit throughout all of those changes.

I ended up lowering my bass a few inches. Less strain on my right wrist, although I don't feel like I've got quite the speed and control as when I wear it high. I do know it straightens my wrist a bit more.

Yeah, I don't find that there's anything ergonomically wrong at all with the long or average scale Dingwall's... I'm just thinking about how I want to keep playing into my late 90's.

I'm wearing mine at the same height as seated. I've tried higher and I just feel physically constrained and like the bass can't move when I move. Too rigid.

My seated height is within an inch of my clavicle. So, pretty high. Letting it down a bit helped with the bent-wrist strain I used to get and I've gotten used to it live, and I actually move a bit better on stage with it a couple inches down.

I'm constantly experimenting with different "off brand" strings for my Super J 5 (more choices for the shorter scale). I read glowing reviews about DR "Black Beauties" - they are a black coated string - so of course I had to buy a set. I just put them on and tried them. VERY impressed. Best of both worlds - smoother and less finger noise but they retain all the brightness and growl of round wounds. Not to mention black strings look cool :)

Yup. She's been dressed in them for a bit now. I wish the B was a little nicer but that is my ONLY beef.

I've used black beauties in the past with good results. Wish they had a length to fit the 37" dingwalls.

I, on the other hand, had a set of Black Beauties once and they must have been defective because they were stiff, kind of sticky, and they were not bright at all.

I used to be all about Elixirs... wonder if there's a good set that'd work on the SP5.

Yes the B string starts to taper about 3/8 of an inch before the nut.. But it doesn't taper much. I'm going to try them on my Z3 anyway and see if putting a small shim on the nut groove solves the problem. I've done in other cases. If not I'll just use a different B string.
