I run a DSM NOISEMAKER OmniCabSim on my pedalboard, then my rack has a Demeter HBP-1 and CrestProlite 2.0 DSP that I run bridged into a pair of Greenboy fEARful cabs. Probably going to get a ProLITE 3.0 DSP at some point .

My SJ also sounds great through the OmniCab

Typically it's a Jule Monique or Noble Bass Preamp/DI into a Crest ProLite 3.0/Jule M700/Demeter Minnie.

I've also had great results with a Mesa M9 and of course the venerable Ampeg SVT.

I prefer something with a lot of headroom so I can really push the low B to be clear/full/loud.

Oh, and I also second the Jule Monique, along with the Genzler Magellan and Genzler line array cabs.

I’m running a Genz Benz Streamliner 600 through a pair of Greenboy’s fEarful 12/6 cubes. It’s a more retro sounding head with a nice tube pre section. Lots of gain staging to play with.

Or an Acoustic Image ten2, a sweet little 600 watt combo that weighs under 30 lb. The Ten2 is about the size of a floor tom, but it does a great job. I can pull the Acoustic Image head out of the “dock” and use it with the fEarfuls. People look sideways at my tiny set up, until they hear it.

I might experiment with different heads when GAS strikes, but the fEarfuls are permanent. I built them in the garage, which was half the fun. I’ve run a variety of gear through these cabs. All of it sounded better with fEarfuls.

My Super PJ 5 came with the same story as the Owl’s. It was at Jive Sound new and I lusted over it for months. I was actually relieved when it sold. I wouldn’t have to explain yet another Dingwall. Six months later it popped up in the TB classifieds. And I jumped on it. Turns out to be the keeper.

I swapped out the neck pup when the P pickup came out.

I’m glad I got a second chance. It’s got more tonal variety than the Super P 4 but delivers the same P wallop. Strung E-C with TI flats.

Looks great with the white pearloid pick guard! I'm thinking about adding the split P to my SJ, too

Such a nice a rig! What would you pick if you could only keep the monique or noble?

Probably the Monique as I've been using it longer and I feel as though it has a little more in terms of options. But really, they're both top notch.
I used the Noble and my Super J5 opening for Alabama Shakes and Steely Dan and got nothing but compliments on my tone.

I wired both Super Fatties to series first. Simple, quick, and totally reversible. Switches would have been another option but I went with simple (and fast and cheap).

This beefs up the bridge pup, moves the neck solo’d about 80% towards the P sound, and makes the both in parallel switch position very cool. Still lower volume than the both in series, but more focused, not so wide sounding.

I keep some volume knob headroom in reserve, and roll off the tone in passive for a very nice sound.

Black to green, that’s all there is to it.

I had a Super PJ 4 at the time, so I was sure I wanted P for the 5 string when that pickup became available. Mostly because it gave me more room between the pickup and neck on the treble side. The routing under the pickguard is universal, and I could have done the P tone reversed as well. Lots of guys like this option. You’ll have to specify for the new pickguard, but a handy DIY guy could probably make his own pickguard and experiment with the pickup configuration first.

Speaking from experience, the downside with switches is that you have so many options to play with and things to check when changing settings. Four selector positions, each with either parallel or series on each pickup (12 options, since positions 1 and 4 each only have two variations). After experimenting, I use only a couple of combinations. And volume needs to be considered when switching.

As for leaving the pickups in J configuration and trying to get a P tone, when the neck's in series, I can get mine thumpy and close enough in a busy band context. Especially with that tone rolled off. Of course, I have an ersatz PJ, as my neck "fatty" is really a Dingwall split coil jammed in a fatty shell. Pickup position and configuration are still limitations, obviously, but there wasn't an option to get the P, given my x-top. Putting everything in parallel gets it back to standard J. It's unique (the shop doesn't have time to make weird neck pickups like mine--it was a highly unusual scenario), and I love it.

I've been real tempted to try out the Genzler BA10-2 with the 350w head. I've heard lots of good things about it. I have a dealer about 45-60 minutes away that has them, but I never get the time to go try it. If I am in that area, I don't have my bass with me and I really want to try it with a Dingwall for a good comparison.

Mesa D800+ into a barefaced six10 but I’m running an always on Barbershop for a mild overdrive. This is as close as we as I’ve been to satisfied with my sound but a tube amp is on the cards. Just found a Mesa D-180 locally that I’m picking up soon, so that should be fun.

I’m also thinking of trying one of the new Positive Grid Bias heads as they look quite interesting if a little underpowered at 300 watts (not that it matters with the 610).

I tried the positive grid distortion pedal and liked it; found it to be pretty cool with the versatility. Have not tried the amps yet. I am a bit leery as 300 SS watts isn’t enough for the loud stuff I do so not sure how useful it would be to me. But if 300 Watts is enough it may be great. Beacause of weight and the fact I am really happy with my ightweight amps, I will probably never go back to heavyweight tube. But I must admit every now and then I do think about getting another one.

I'm using 350w now and it is more than sufficient. I actually seemed to prefer 2x10 vs. 2x12 (which runs 500w), at least in the Markbass setup, but am just running the single 12 now because it is quicker to setup and now I have to tear down every week (where I used to be able to leave the 2x10 and head set up). I'd definitely try a 12 as well, as I completely open. I do wonder if a single 10 will give me the sound I want.
