Dishonesty/Deception in band promotion

Perhaps your bandmate should consider a career as a politician. He would fit in just fine there.

Exactly what I was thinking. Want to get elected and/or pass a law? Lie. Period. Your supporters will defend you as the ends justify the means.

Your band mate is silly and a bit pathetic. And I love redheads! I could have easily been duped by this one! Sheesh!

What if a redheaded girl shows up at your show??? She is in for some surprises that create a bad situation for her, the club and potentially your band; i.e. word of mouth on the kind of people your band draws.

Are you ultimately responsible for what happens in the crowd. Of course not. But to help facilitate these situations is deplorable. I would tell him the band will not tolerate that ever again. If and when it does - he's gone.

My $.02

It's Talkbass law.

“Not to go on all-fours but to play on four strings; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to suck at arpeggios; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to try pervy band marketing strategies; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to claw the Bark of Trees but rather to use it as AAA top facing for furniture basses; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to chase licks above the 5th fret; that is the Law. Are we not Men?"

I find it hilarious.

Let it go.

I find it creative and kind of funny as well, and am a bit curious to hear if it worked out.

Id never do something like that with my band, and if another member did Id tell them thats not how we do things, but Id not fire them over it.

When it comes to promoting shows Im all about being honest. I used to work in a band where the bandleader would advertise our set time as being 30-60 minutes before we actually went on, since some of our fans were known to be late. That didnt sit well with me, and eventually people caught on anyways. He'd use the same tactic with band members, since they were all a bit flaky and would show up at the last minute.

Don't worry. The laugh's on your bandmate. His email box will be full of penis pics.

Thats true. Hopefully he didnt use the bands email address.

Though he sometimes sings, it was actually a drummer that did this.

No surprise there. :smug:

I'll repeat my offer. Fifty bucks, and I'll be the redhead.

No one is scoring, by the way.

For $50 and a redhead wig I will put out. Im sure I can get the guys to buy me enough free drinks.

What one person does reflects on the entire band and those who felt deceived will assume the entire band was in on the charade!

There is no way for the pervs who show up to know that a member in the OP's band placed the ad.

edit - if the drummer was smart enough to cover his tracks

The whole band should show up in drag, wearing red wigs.

Thats genius. :)

It WILL bring some people unfortunately.

How do i know? Because once some years ago me and my gf were so sickened by CL pervo's we decided to make up a fake girl and bait them. We just wanted to see the turnout. Had them meet "her" at a mall 5 minutes away. The mail adress i used got positively flooded by mainly pictures of dicks. I'm talking like over a hundred within hours. And still some months later once in a while id get a mail from one of the guys asking if "i" still wanted it... Some guys actually asked "us" if we minded if they brought their friend along...i mean this was for sex.

Anyway there wasn't much else we could do except waste their time. We went to the mall and watched as easily over twenty men, most i recognized from pics (some included their faces too but pretty much ALL of them had their genitals pictured in the mail) just walked about the meeting spot evidently looking for someone. Later, as mails of angry men (i made one hipster miss out on a vegan pot luck! They were really mad about this) were sent to "me" i decided to write on craigslist they'd been had. Those that i had been particularly disgusting or even borderline rapey in their responses, i publicly posted their email.

I know most of you will probably think what we did in itself is a little or even a lot psycho and if nothing else a waste of time and possibly a little cruel or even misandrist, it's possible. But some of these guys REALLY needed a wake up call (and i'm not naive enough to think that was it...though i went back and forth for a bit with the vegan pot luck guy and i think got them to realise that...*** are you doing looking for sex on CL). I'm saying this as one of them but...some of us men are just scary. The lengths some of us will go to for sex.... its not so much that even though, it's the ideas they have about women....

A member of my band took it upon himself, in addition to traditional promotion for an upcoming gig, to post in CL's no strings attached section something along the lines of pretending to be a 5'4 redhead female with green eyes looking to hook up at the show. He put it forward as if this fictional girl is a friend of the band from Chicago in town to see us play and looking for a place to stay and possibly more.

I find this a bit deplorable because at best it will draw people out to the show who are there only for a hookup with an anonymous person. At worst it comes across as desperate and underhanded if it becomes known that it was the work of the band.

He claims that this is just a trial idea and feels that it could be a benefit to the band if we're playing in a town that we haven't played in before.

I feel that it's deceitful, predatory towards lonely men and perverts that might show up (hopefully not so many perverts) and also towards any women at the show who have to deal with said perverts.

The damage is done, I'm just curious what the consensus is regarding such situations, hence the posting.

It was actually a clever and brilliant way to fill a club. Hats off! It matters not how you get them in the door, but that you get the. In the door. The club could care less how you help them to sell booze. That is why they are there. Being sanctimonious about the idea is certainly your right, but it's not getting you any further than "honesty". Nobody is going to complain to the club owner that they are a perv looking for a hookup that didn't show up, and I'm sure there weren't too many girls bothered by guys looking for hookups. Just mKe sure your girl in the ad is wearing something not likely found in a rock club like a Barry Manilow T-shirt or something. That will minimize bothering the innocent.

And who knows, a lonely guy that shows up just might actually meet a nice lonely girl....and get his groove on. And besides the entertainment industry is made up from a long serious trail of BS and lies....mistrust....abuse....backstabbing....this is just. Another tool in the ladder to actually "making it". The OP's bandmate has options...politics.. Or music promotion.
