DNA Owners Group

Hey iriegnome,

After looking at your video I have no idea what that clicking sound is, but you have the gain/master set up wrong. The gain should be MUCH higher than that. Turn the master off and start turning the gain up until you see the gain-set light flash at your lowest and loudest notes. It should not be on solid, but dancing as you play the lowest and loudest you're going to play. THEN start turning the master up until you get the volume you want. If your gain-set is lighting up at just 9 o'clock on the gain knob, then you will need to push in the pad button which will drop the input by 12 db. The gain light needs to be coming on somewhere between about 11 o'clock to 2 o'clock (even 3 o'clock on some passive basses). Wherever that light dances on your lowest and loudest notes is where your gain needs to be set, but it's got to be high enough to send a hot, clean signal to the power section.

What's happening right now is you have the set up backwards. You are currently supplying a very weak pre-amp signal and amplifying the hell out of it. There's just not much to amplify. If you set your gain as I mentioned you will be sending the cleanest and hottest signal to the power section to amplify and it will make a WORLD of difference from the settings you have now. When the master gets up around noon on the amp without a bunch of stompboxes between your bass and the amp, it will be putting out almost maximum power.

Although a lot of other companies recommend running the master wide open and the gain low (especially guitar amps and GK amps), that doesn't work with anything David has ever designed in either Eden or DNA amps. Set up the gain as I suggested and then bring the master up and I think you will see right away what I'm talking about.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Another quick note...I noticed on one of your pictures that you had the shape control up at 12 o'clock. The shape control is great for practicing or very low volume settings but it acts a lot like the old "loudness" button on stereos. It boosts the bass and the treble to compensate for your hearing at low volumes and it also scoops out the mids. Can sound nice at low volume but when playing in a group, you will disappear. You need those mids to cut through the rest of the sound and transmit that thump in the chest we all love. If you turn it up above about 9 o'clock, you will get lost in the mix while playing live.

I got a e-mail from David yesterday. We worked things out and I am going to get a new amp direct from him. He was not happy that I put that video up on youtube though. However, I told him that I had only meant to show what was happening with my amp and I did not mean any harm other than to allow various people to tell me if my amp was poop or maybe the speaker. Well, he requested that I remove it and since I only wanted to show what was up with the amp and that situation has been resolved, I have removed it. Sent him a note and apologized (I guess I missed the bigger picture on that one), but I should have a new amp Tuesday!!

Update on my 1350. I spoke with The Bass Club Chicago and David. He is making or finishing a new amp for me. I am hoping to have it on Tuesday. Not only will I have to learn how to use it on Stage in 3 days after I get it (Friday at Summer Stomp Festival) I will be on stage with Rat Dog's Mark Karin and Jerry Garcia Bands Melvin Seals on Saturday 8/1... Trial by fire

Just remember to set the gain first with everything set at flat and compression and shape off. Then move up the master to a volume you like and make any EQ changes you desire. If the EQ changes stop the gain-set light from blinking on your lowest/loudest notes bump it up a notch or two. If it stays on constantly without blinking, bump it down until it dances. Then you'll be fine.

Rock on!

Had a nice 20 minute phone chat with David yesterday afternoon. We just had general discussions about the new gear, some of the old Eden stuff I've used in the past and what would best suit me these days. David was pretty confident that since we play week in and week out with PA support I could get away with a single 210 cab for now and then add one to the mix later on down the road if needed. Trying to move some gear I have lying around to see if I can get a cab here pretty soon.

Ok. Drove to Chicago last night. Picked up my very own brand new (2nd try) 1350. David got a new one out to The Bass Club to replace my #25 of 50 that did not seem to be working correctly. This time I brought my speakers, cables and cords to plug the 1350 into and give it a whirl. After 10 minutes or so and got it kind of dialed in and sounding pretty good! I will get some pics of the first of the new 2015 series. Logo is different, labeling is a bit different. But functions are all the same.

Well DNA gang, after a couple of short emails with David after our phone conversation I will be trying to move some gear ASAP to join the ranks here in the DNA club. I will start out with the 1350 and the 8ohm 2X10 cabinet. If all goes according to plan I will try to purchase a second 2X10 sometime down the road and be good to go for any gig we do (always PA supported). It seems I'll be kind of the lone gun here in the Austin area waving the DNA flag, so we'll see if I get any double takes on the gear from my fellow bass players. As I think I've mentioned before, I've been through tons of gear after all my Eden stuff was stolen after 10 years of owning it and just have been missing something along the journey. I guess Davids designs were just what I was meant to play. Anyhow, my WT-550 will be up for sale soon to help fund the new gear and I am really looking forward to getting DNA! Carry on.

A bit of a review on the newest 1350. First thing was that the DI output is a little low. I had to turn it up to about 7 for our sound guy to get enough juice to be comfortable. Now I am not sure if that is normal or ok since my SWR had a super hot output and I barely ever turned it up to 3. Good clean output though. Nice and there sounding. As for the Shape circuit. Had mine at 8. Almost all the way up. Never once did I even come close to being lost in the mix and we have a lot going on on stage. Gave my tone that Huge mid bomb I love. Now I did switch my speakers from my Faital's back to my Eminence Delta's as well. Tuner out worked perfectly as it should. I will get a pic of my settings from the show last night. I boosted my Mid High's, but ran everything else pretty flat. Added just a tiny bit of the compressor (it sounds too digital for my early liking). I was hitting the peak light every once in a while when the band was totally hammering on a tune, but it was good.. For my first night, the amp worked out very well. The damp wet night air here really kind of hid some of my high end, but man the bottom end was killing it!!

Cool review. Is it possible your input gain could have been turned up higher? Just a thought for why the DI level may have seemed low. David's designs typically call for setting a strong signal at the Pre, then rolling up the Master to control stage volume.

Put her through a 4-1/2 hour show last night on an open air outdoor stage. Amp preformed wonderfully. I still need a bit of tweaking, but it just is sounding great. I am sorry, I don't really understand bringing up the gain high and the Master Volume up until I get a stage volume. I get distortion. Everything I always new about amps is bring up the gain high and the master low and you get distortion/growl as most call it now. I want super clean, very definable tone, so I keep the gain at about 3 or so and the master is at about 5 (Half way). Beautiful clean clear tone with great volume. Shape is at about 7-1/2 and is killing that mid section! Still a little clicky, but since the action on my bass is super super low, that explains a bit of that, which is where the tweaking will come in
