Do you have a stage name?

I have a stage name for music and used one for business purposes. Warning. Fake IDs can land you in jail unless you have proper authorization. Never use a false name or ID with a law enforcement official unless you have proper back up.

I worked overseas for years which presented some safety and security issues for my family at home. Any info released overseas was bogus - home address, next of kin, emergency contact cell phone no. etc. GC and others get the same info. I just add my stage name to this info package to people I play with. Business card goes to 3rd party number until I know you real well.

Here are a few of mine:

Salamander: Because I'm usually indifferent when it comes to decisions. Singer says I make a face like a salamander.

Rye Bread: My name is Ryan, so I guess this was the best our guitar player could come up with.

Rhino: I play with a lot of charge and bottom. The name I prefer the most. Also an animal variation of my name.

I've had a couple given to me, they didn't really stick, thank goodness, because they're both long and not very catchy.

The first came about because I would never stop playing a tune at rehearsal. Being that I still sucked, I was trying to make sure I remembered the best way to play a tune at the end so when the band stopped I just kept rehearsing a bit more. So a friend, gifted keyboardist and cellist who I still have the pleasure to play with, called me The Unstoppable Bass Monolith. Suuuper catchy, right? It actually hung around and still comes up from time to time, to the bewilderment of almost everyone who hears it.

In the 90's I was in a funk band the lead singer decided we all needed personas and stage names. His was pretty amazing: Booteo. Or maybe that should be spelled Bootyo, or Booty-Oh. Not sure, I never saw it written down. Anyway I think that is very clever and catchy. He was like a mix of 75% Prince and 25% Bootsy himself, very talented.

The name he and the drummer (Killer, which is his actual nickname from high school) gave me? Stu-thousand-on-the-one, a bass odyssey. Kinda makes Unstoppable Bass Monolith just roll off the tongue by comparison, doesn't it?

Thankfully none of these monstrosities has ever stuck in a meaningful way.

Not a name I chose. My real name is Grant. The guys in the band started calling me Grantonian last year. Don't know why. They even introduce me that way sometimes. Doesn't bother me.

The only other time I had a stage name was for a trailer trash theme costume party gig. We were renamed the Trailer Trash Band for the evening and each took alternate personas. I was Zeke.

I was tagged with "Grim" by guys I rode with many, many years ago and it stuck. I have it tattooed on me, painted on a bike and on my stage rig. It's a nickname really, more than a stage name.
